These are fun movies but on some level they bother me. There's some very stupid stuff. I remember in the original Star Wars Luke and Han were shooting at oncoming fighters in these ball turret things. That's 1940's bomber technology. Humans trying to eye-ball aim & fire at attacking space craft? What?? And what's the deal with all of the outer space explosions? If there's no air, what does the explosion sound wave propagate through? And how come I can see the bolts of energy flying out of the blasters? They must be going like 60 MPH.
I like SW and ST but I prefer a movie like 2001: A Space Odyssey. It got the science right, and man, that's one heck of an interesting plot. Great symbolism too; I love when the australopithecus tosses the bone into the air (his newly discovered tool) and the scene switches to the modern day spacecraft (just a fancier tool). The only depressing thing about that movie is that it's 2006 and we're technologically behind the times of the movie.
