This has been discussed a lot before and I honestly don't think that he will ever attempt it when in his prime. But it is still interesting to talk about.
Michael Johnson
19.32/43.18
Jeremy Wariner
20.19/43.45
I think the fact that he is almost a second slower then MJ at 200m but is very close to the 400m world record shows that he has good endurance, at least for a 1 lapper.
His all out 200m is 20.19 and his all out 400m pace per 200m is 21.7 seconds.
That would be like someone running a 28 second 200 and a 60 second 400. Good endurance, no?
Wariners superior endurance compared to his 400m competitors is also highlighted by the fact that he doesn't win a lot of his races until the last 100-120 meters-he holds form better then his competitors due to his superior endurance, not superior speed.
I agree with this post. I think that it is quite reasonable to think he could be one of the best in the world in the 800 if he trained for it, perhaps even the best. Breaking the world record... well, I'm not going to bet on ANYBODY running faster than Wilson Kipketer, but if anyone in the world right now can do it, it's probably Wariner (or maybe Kaki in a few years).
If Wariner and Webb raced in an 800 tomorrow, Webb would definitely win, but I think it would be pretty close. The thing is, Wariner is in way better speed shape right now, whereas Webb is in the middle of high mileage training. If they both trained for the 8 for two months, it's anyone's guess. I think they would both run in the 1:43-1:44 range.
