His WR race in Cali, too. Solo running on cinders with unreal splits and an incredible last lap. 3:51. Solo. On Cinders. Let that sink in.
Did you know that Ryun also raced on synthetic? Despite this, he never ran a mile faster than he did on cinders. Unpopular opinion: synthetic isn’t that much faster than cinder.
Well, if you know your history you will also know that he got married in January of 1969, basically retired, started a family, and then tried to come back and run the '72 Olympics. All of this was before athletes could be pro athletes, so he also worked a full time job to support his family. So, yeah, you can believe that the track didn't make a difference, but the reality is that he never raced on synthetic in his prime.
Morceli suffers from coming right before El G. In the end you are guessing on drugs. You can make up guesses about shoes/tracks (about the same) but maybe Marcelo was just old school steroids and El G was full on epoing…
For all we know Webb was the greatest clean miler ever once you take out the drug cheats. Seems unlikely but who knows.
So a Moroccan is a doper but not an Algerian. Kind of hard to believe!
You dont t think steroids are doping? Interesting…..
Sort of a stretch to think drugs, tracks, and shoes are worth 10+ seconds. Never being beaten sounds good but how many competitive races did he win in a row? How many of them were basically 2 person races with Lincoln. How does that compare to Morceli going undefeated for like 4 years and racking up 50 wins? El G had some epic win streaks also.
Pretty much all the guys pre Elliot are hard to take seriously. After that it is all speculation. Would epo, synthetic tracks and dragon flies make Ryun a 3:41 guy? EPO instead of blood packing and Shoes get Coe another 6s? Dragonflies get El G 2s?
He likely wasn't even approaching his peak when he retired. He was widely expected to become the first man under 3:50 for the mile and to break every WR from the 800m to the marathon.
Yes. But not just this, Also the shot put, discus, javelin and hammer records. Than any swimming and any weight lifting record. Has had some real talents. And was white.

hey smart ass learn the difference between then and than first,
I'm going with Herb Elliott. World Record and Olympic Gold by 22. Never beaten over the distance.
I'll say this with complete confidence - if Hicham El Guerrouj was in this era with wavelight, both the 1500m record and the mile record would be someone in the 1.0-1.5 seconds faster range.
Despite all the sub 3.27's he never was able to nail the pacing when he was at his absolute peak (97-01). When he ran his 1500m WR he was 2.46.33 at 1200m. When he ran histories second fastest time he was 2.46.10 but had run far too quickly in the opening 400 (54.0). If he and his pacers had been able to follow even 54.5 second pace lights he was absolutely capable of going through in mid 1.49's, 1200m in 2.44.5-2.45.0 and then closing in 40.5-41.0
And he had races where he got close to this scenario but the issue was that the pace structure was just all wrong - super fast off the line and super fast opening 300m's because that was just the status quo at the time. If you are opening a 1500m at that speed with a low 40.XX second 300m it will compromise you later in the race no matter how good you are.
Barring injury or a temperamental decision to chuck it all, Elliott's potential seems limitless. So young and with so much already under his belt, he is fully expected to run the mile in 3:50 or less within a year or two by everyone from John Landy, whom Elliott has replaced as Australia's national sports hero, to his foremost rival, Melbourne Schoolteacher Mervyn Lincoln. Many track experts agree with Percy Cerutty that Elliott may well pocket, simultaneously, all the track titles from 800 to 10,000 meters. Even the marathon, 26 miles, 385 yards is not ruled out; Herb is already verging on marathon training.
If Elliott had not retired at 22, we would likely to have had to wait until the EPO era for a male African WR.
For sure he would have beaten Keino and Ryun in 68, even at the age of 30.

Ah, right. As if it didn’t take 6 years after the introduction of synthetic for Bayi to finally break Ryun’s record by .1 seconds. Ron Clarke also raced on synthetic and still ran his fastest times on cinder. The synthetic comparison is in no way shape or form equivalent to what we’re seeing now with the shoes.

It's almost as if you're suggesting that people get slower as they age. Who knew?

Nice try. 4 years after synthetic was introduced, Viren finally broke Clarkes record by 1 second. Yup, one of the greatest 10000m runners ever, with the aid of super-fast synthetic only managed to beat Clarke’s record by 1 second four years after synthetic started showing up. Viren again used synthetic to his advantage to go out and break the 5000m record by an astounding .2 seconds. Rest easy, your 4:30 cinder mile is worth 4:29.99 on synthetic.

Maybe that says more about Clarke than it does Viren.

(I hate writing posts on my phone and the "helpful" autocorrect you only notice hours later)

Or maybe it says that cinder to synthetic isn’t what we think it is. If synthetic was worth anything substantial, and with the emergence of, ahem, pharmaceutical help, all of those records should have been immediately obliterated within the year.

I am not Hoady, you paranoid creep.
And your little quote means nothing. It's an opinion as uninformed as yours.
