Female coach having affair with male runner. Should I report it?

You should take the Safe Sport class so you understand the often blurred lines of consent between a coach in a position of power and an athlete of any age. Consent is not as clearly defined as you think it is and taking the class will educate you as to why this is a rule. Like it or not, it is a rule and if the club is sanctioned, a rule that the coach knows and agreed to. It's not that hard to not date your athletes and should be even easier when you agree not to.

Report it and maybe nothing comes of it or maybe it does, but you have done your part in keeping athletes safe.

The whole point of coaching is to be able to have affairs with fit youngsters of the opposite sex, or whichever sex you prefer. Why else would someone even go into a crappy job like club coaching?

Power imbalance? Doesn't exist when all parties are adults. Anyone who willingly becomes "submissive" in the presence of a coach should take their money to a BDSM club.

I am assuming here since this is "club" that both parties are adults and have been since the relationship started. If one was a minor, then report it to the police, not just to SafeSport.

One is only a mandatory reporter if one of the people involved is a minor. A report for sexual misconduct could be filed with SafeSport if a crime has been committed. A consensual sexual relationship between 2 adults is not a crime. Yes, you can report it to SafeSport however the club would need to be under its auspices.

If it is a club, then I wonder just what "power" the coach has over the runner? The runner does not need the coach to sign up the runner for meets, does not have financial control over the runner or access to funds (hopefully, if so that could be more criminal than a SafeSport violation).

If there is a club policy against it you could report it to the president of the club, but to what ends? Unless you feel like you are getting short changed due to the coach's attention on that runner, how is it harming you?

Also, in looking at the history of track and field and the number of coaches who have been married or romantically involved with athletes, it seems pretty clear that SafeSport is not going to be involved unless the athlete brings a case.

This sort of thing would not be allowed in the workplace, so it’s clear why Safe Sport would also have rules against it.

Yeah, if it’s me on an adult club team, I probably am not going to care. But if I thought there could be a problem in bringing it to light (not getting per diem, getting ostracized by teammates, etc.), then this is exactly why Safe Sport exists. Not everyone is going to be ok with something like this.

If I am an athlete on a local running club, my coach is not "in a position of power" over me. I am paying them for their coaching services in the same way that I pay a plumber to fix my toilet. A grow up in a recreational club is a completely different situation from a kid on a high school or college team where the coach does hold power over the athlete. The rule you cite doesn't apply to the situation.

The only reason you're thinking of reporting it is because you're jealous. This female coach causes your man sausage to get a bit stiff and you secretly wish that she was having an affair with you.

Indeed, some are even paying for club membership just for new opportunities for hunting for sex, so it’s perfectly ethical to hit them consensually. They’d be disappointed if you didn’t.

You should report it to the CEO of the running club immediately. Maybe they will take away gatorade priveledges.

I just renewed and as I'm sure you know, all USATF coaches have to be SafeSport certified, so I can assure you that it's in the training and in the code, however, that doesn't mean that every relationship is a violation. I'm not sure on the dates, but Mike Smith of NAU and Rachel (Schneider) Smith obviously were/are a thing and could have fallen into this scenario and they ended up fine. Every situation is not the same and that's why there are allegations and investigations. The rule is a good one and serves a purpose.

As a club coach I can tell you that it's one of the perks and quite harmless. I can gauge by how they respond to massage whether they're a candidate for side piece of the month.
