How do I prevent this? Happens almost daily. The stench is awful when the sun heats it up. Cayenne pepper? What do I do? I don’t want to hurt the cat. 🐈

Piss on the cat
The cat does it between 1-4 am. I really don’t want to be up at that time.
Your weak resolve demonstrates that this problem doesn’t bother you
Call your dog catcher
Cat owners are truly just betas who let their pets grab them by the balls.
Meanwhile, dog owners don't tolerate this BS and can actually control their animals.
Live and let live. Don't be a Karen.

Correct answer is for OP to piss around the mailbox to mark territory.
Go to a pet store or Amazon and ask/look for a pet away spray. I'd just do a search on Amazon for a product, read the reviews to see if it works, and buy it.
Live trap
Easy. Switch mailboxes with your neighbor.
Barbed wire exists
We had a half feral cat (mother was one of those "neighborhood cats") who we wanted to keep, but she marked with urine in the house. Brought her to the vet shrink at Tufts who put the cat on Prozac. It worked. We kept her until the day she died at age 17.
Nobody cares, pal.
Aim a sprinkler at it. Or a hose. Honestly this is a non-problem. The cat is likely keeping vermin at bay in your hood. Be grateful. I have feral cats patrolling my (their :-)) property all the time. Never noticed any smell.
Forget that. Predict the cat's 5k time. This is a running forum.
apparently you mean the cat is spraying the top of the mailbox. Spraying the mailbox post wouldn't be a big deal, every animal does that.
So get a mailbox it can't sit on top of, with a triangular shape and pointy top.
You can keep feral cats away through the use of some odors they hate. From a google search:
"Citrus or lemon scents (orange peels, lemon peels), garlic, ammonia, vinegar, coffee grinds, pipe tobacco, mustard, citronella, or eucalyptus all deter cats as well."
This sounds like a fun little project - save your coffee grounds, orange peels, etc., and sprinkle them at the base of your mailbox post.
I had problems with squirrels digging up a planter box on my porch and tried this with coffee grounds, but it didn';t work, and i put a layer of tight wire mesh on top of the soil instead. That worked like a charm. But I would try the odor stuff on the cat, though, or the feral cat deterrent spray like the other poster suggested.
The cat is exhibiting its dominance over you. The only way to get it to stop now is you’re going to have to fight it…and win.
Good luck.
