@focus on your own race is 100% right, this is NOT the Olympic trials for Australia. I watched the race, it was an sshow from start to finish and Robinson did everything he could to get out of traffic and close and got out kicked. If Robinson can get the qualifying time he should get in despite his 5th place finish, he's afforded one off race.
Men's 5000 Metres Final
PLACE NAME MARK
1. Matthew RAMSDEN 13:39.61
2. Morgan MCDONALD 13:39.66
3. Jackson SHARP 13:39.82
4. Toby GILLEN 13:40.11
5. Ky ROBINSON 13:40.22
6. Jack RAYNER 13:41.17
He's the 2nd ranked Aussie in both the 10,000 and 5000 and has the best 5000 time run since the qualifying time window opened a 13:06 in Boston in December. Rayner should be picked for the 10,000 so they can go elsewhere for the 5000. Ramsden and McDonald are the only athletes on this list outside of Robinson that will even sniff the Olympic standard, Robinson has dominated Sharp and Gillen over and over and over again.
He has World Championship experience competing for his country at the 2003 XC World Championships where he was the top Aussie finisher on home soil. He also ran the 10,000 at the 2023 Commonwealth Games placed 6th, top Aussie and the 2002 World Championships in Eugene where he finished 8th in his heat, top Aussie and just missed the finals and toasted Ramsden by 25 seconds, oh and he wasn't training for the event.
If he gets the time and none of these guys run faster before the June 30th deadline it would be a travesty for him to not be selected by the committee, he's certainly a top 2 or 3 athlete at either distance and its not that close.
