I agree that the 5k/10k double in 1 day was dumb, but it is important to remember that these were not Olympic trials for Australia, it was just the national championships.
The national selectors can and probably will pick whoever they want (and will listen to Nic Bideau when selecting the team).
If Robinson runs under 13:05 he will probably get to go.

I doubt there are any university coaches in the US who have any wording in their job descriptions about prioritizing the chances of one or more of their athletes making an Olympic team.
A coach is paid by their employer to maximize NCAA results for that college. They may elect to take an athlete’s Olympic aspirations into account but, they are working for the university (and staying employed at said university).

I doubt there are any university coaches in the US who have any wording in their job descriptions about prioritizing the chances of one or more of their athletes making an Olympic team.
There are lots of university coaches who have bonuses written into their contracts if any of their athletes compete at the senior national championship or a world championship. Bonuses for all-conference and all-americans are generally more lucrative though.

This is a stupid take and a bunch of simps and/or anti-Stanford haters are now jumping on board. As discussed at the time, he ran a 5000 at roughly 90% effort in the morning then essentially tempoed a 10000 in the evening to knock out his NCAA regional qualifiers PRECISELY so that he wouldn't have to race again until NCAA regionals. It was essentially a workout day and was totally fine, and leaves him open to focus on the Aussie trials. Get a grip, morons.

No, this isn't on Ky. He ran the 5/10k double March 29 or 30th. You don't think that running that two weeks ago takes the sting out of a kick? He was .6 out of first. That's on coach. The fact is that having Olympians on a college team is worth a lot more than getting qualifiers out of the way early. NCAA teams love to advertise that stuff. It's second only to NCAA titles for them.

Pretty sure Ky would have been involved with this decision. It might even have been his idea.
You'll note Ky just ran in Australia. Many teams would not have let him go. It's tough balancing NCAA, an Australian national meet in April and an Olympic year. This takes discussion and planning between coach and athlete.

I agree, but Stanford loves telling everyone they've had more Olympians than any other university. And any college coach worth his pay should be helping an athlete with a legitimate shot make the Olympics. It's a win-win for all.

I think the only current Aussie athlete to have run under the qualifier is Mcsweyn, but he hasn't ran under it during the qualifying window yet.
Rayner, Robinson and Mcdonald are within 3 seconds or so, and Ramsden's best time is about 12 seconds from the qualifier.
So they will all have to go after it before the olympics.
I agree that something going on with his training isn’t resulting in the same magic as last year. And the 10k/5k is certainly questionable especially if they planned to race him again so soon in a championship race . I’m sure the logic was “let’s knock out the regional times now”. That said it’s possible that travel played a role in his performance in Australia. Maybe Ky doesn’t do well with that big travel. Also side note.
Also totally agree ncaa coaches are incentivized for ncaa performances and not if an athlete makes international teams. Even further many are only incentivized for conference performances ie they wanna get the most points out of athletes at conference even if it’s at the cost of them qualifying for nationals down the road.
