Documentary telling the story of Kenyan athlete David Rudisha, the greatest 800m runner the world has ever seen, and his highly unusual coach, the Irish Cath...
I’m one of the biggest Webb fans. But, Quincy is a bigger talent than Webb.
In any case, he looks like a middle school kid, still. I hope he hits puberty and runs 44 low or 43 high as high schooler. Knighton ran 19.49 as an 18 year old.
I think the 400m is best even but I wouldn’t be surprised if he ran 1:43 also.
He has a very similar profile to Will Sumner. Just smaller, younger, and faster.
Not surprising for a 45x strength-based quarter miler. Being that he is not a pure sprinter with world class 100/200 performances, the 800m should be secondary event.
Separate subject, he should not consider the USOTs; he simply isn't good enough and there will be enough competition at World Juniors.
he runs 45.7. He should be able to run 1:50 in practice.
would you lose your minds in a similar way if a 1:45 guy ran a 4:10 mile?
I'm underwhelmed by this 1:50 as well. Alan Webb ran what...a :47 in the 400m? And a 1:43 800m. I'm not saying Wilson should not be able to run 1:39 eventually or anything like that. But for me to be surprised, I would need to see him run a 1:46. This kid has amond the best ever wheels, among the best ever 600m time, and he's much more grounded that Cade Flatt.I see the Obea Moore comparisons getting thrown around. Nah. Obea was ganster. He's more like William Reed.
These kind of takes are very naive and woefully ignorant. A sprinter going up to the 800m is so incredibly and dynamically different than a 1500m going down to the 800m. You're also comparing an Alan Webb who ran 47.x 400m in high school, but only 1:47 in the 800m. And he ran a lot of 800s. Quincy Wilson is f****ing sixteen and ran 1:50 in his what like third 800m ever in high school? You people are clueless.
He will improve tremendously as he matures, he is still a baby, he will run 1:45, his 1:50 race was even splits.
Can't compare him to Webb, he was a generational talent and was in his early 20's when he ran those times.

Also to TrackCoach: He absolutely should run the OT...They only arrive once every four years if anything for the experience - it is what a 16 y/o Sydney ML did, lest we forget Rio.
just think about how fast he would be if he wasnt always looking up at the sun
Ever stop to think it may actually be helping him? He looks ahead and up, which supports his more upright form and probably allows him to get more distance out of his strides.
Usually I’m not a fan of the whole “this 400 guy should move up” thing, but here’s kind of what I’m thinking about. He’s the fastest ever 400 runner and an elite national level 800 guy training for the 400. Could that be flipped, where he runs 1:46 or faster in highschool training for the 800, and also runs some of the best if not the best 400 times in the country? Sumner esque.
If he has the talent to be an elite 400 runner, he should do that. His career will be much longer and he can load up on relay medals too. 800 runners have a (usually) short shelf life.
There has never been empirical scientific evidence for positive splitting 400m &/or 800m event(s). We just have T&F coaches telling us most 400m & 800m athletes set 400m & 800m personal best, positive splitting.
The 800m race referenced in this thread was a tear drop start. In U.S. high school meets, up to 1950-something, 440 yard dash started all athletes on a straight line, not even a tear drop.
History of 400m, 440y, 800m, 880y, go out fast, get in lane one and race the shortest distance. A dozen guys in an 800m race and the guys will start too fast. The guys split 400m yesterday in 52.xx & 53.xx. Too fast of a split.
Note: Most high school and D-3 200m dash sprinters positive split 200m dash but it doesn't help performance. Elite 200m dash athletes know to sprint first 100m of 200m dash at 15/16th effort.

I believe Wilson was 54.44 first 400M, actually an incredibly efficient way to go ,especially for an inexperienced guy. Usually the way an experienced miler might do it.
