Had a group of athletes at the FSU relays this weekend. This was our first year at the meet and we made the trip after being impressed by fast results from previous years. The invitational portion of the meet had a set schedule which appeared to allow ample time for each event with limited numbers of heats. Friday night there were issues with the weather so they went ahead of schedule which was understandable. Saturday, the meet fell way behind schedule because the check-in area was chaotic and very slow. They called for athletes to enter the check-in area 50 minutes or more before they ran and they were told they could not leave to warm up. Athletes stood in line for 45 minutes to check in which was particularly problematic as it got warm in the afternoon. The people working in the check-in area seemed overwhelmed and yelled often. I am sure they were not put into a position to succeed so the chaos wasn't the fault of any individual. You might expect a local meet on a rolling schedule to run long, but I think it is reasonable to expect a meet hosted by a university that has resources to be run in a competent manner. The primary issue wasn't that the meet ran late, but instead that athletes were not able to properly prepare to compete and some appeared to suffer from the effects of standing in the sun in line for such a long time. From talking to other coaches, apparently the meet has been similarly chaotic in past years. Teams and families investing money to travel out of state for this meet should be aware of these issues.
