Times are changing. Movie theater attendance is way way way down. Probably due to streaming availability,
So, theaters are desperate to make revenue however they can, and that means jacking up the prices of things like refreshments.
I went to see a movie recently and was shocked at how empty the theater was. That is the story here - a very desperate industry grasping to stay afloat.
I hadn’t really looked at the price in the recent past but was surprised to see the cashier ring me up for $10.69 for the smallest sized popcorn at the movies yesterday. I realize that’s how they make their money and all that, but still WTH.
I haven't been to a movie theater in several years now just due to the streaming services I have somewhat not-on-purpose acquired.
It sounds as if you don’t entirely know what you are doing Flagpole. Are you OK?

People actually go to a movie theater?
This thread made me think about the last time I went to a movie theater.
Prices are up everywhere still. Whatever is reported is probably a small snapshot of reality either way.
Movie popcorn has always been expensive. There was news circulating that a meal at Five Guys costs $24 now. It always cost more than other fast food burger joints.
I’m more concerned about thing I can’t control, like the cost of housing, transport, education.

Theaters only keep 40% of the ticket price on average. They have to make money in other ways to offset that and do so via concessions.
The problem is that people are just not as excited about going to the movies anymore compared to the past. No need to with giant home TV's and the various digital rental options. So theaters will probably keep jacking up the prices of concessions to handle dwindling ticket sales.
Movies are just not as exciting as they were from say 1990 to mid 2010's when Marvel was at it's heyday.

Kind of funny, but I hope to ease your mind with this explanation:
1) I purposefully subscribed to Netflix. It is still the best streaming service. When I got that service, I thought that might be it. But...
2) I am an Amazon Prime member just for the shipping, but they have a streaming service as part of that. So, didn't really go get that for the streaming service.
3) I have Max (formerly HBO Max) because it is part of my cell phone plan. Again, didn't get my cell phone plan for the streaming service.
4) A few years ago, I got Disney+ because I wanted to watch The Mandalorian. I considered getting rid of it when I was done with that, but then they had a CHEAP bundle with Hulu and ESPN+ that was too good to pass up. ESPN+ mostly sucks, and I'd never get it on its own, but I have watched several things there. Hulu has many things I like, so it has been worth it.
5) Once The Olympics start, I MIGHT get Peacock for the Olympic coverage, but I haven't decided yet.
6) Oh, I am also a Flotrack/milesplt subsciber. Did that one on purpose. Still enjoy it.
Movie snacks have always been very expensive. I haven't been to a movie theater in several years now just due to the streaming services I have somewhat not-on-purpose acquired. I would have guessed $12 for a small popcorn, so to me that looks like a good deal.
We are missing the forest for the trees.

I remember back in college, my friends and I used to joke about having to take out a loan just to afford a bucket of popcorn at the movies. But hey, it's part of the experience, right? As for the whole Five Guys situation, yeah, it's definitely getting pricier to grab a burger these days. But you know what's cool? Sometimes, instead of shelling out big bucks at the cinema concession stand, my friends and I rent a popcorn machine for movie nights at home. It's way cheaper and just as fun!

and biden doesn't charge you for the popcorn, some business does. and no one checks if the business has record profits while they charge "inflation" prices.
If you're interested, I found this cool website where you can rent popcorn machines for events: . It's a small way to take back a bit of control over those pesky expenses.
