Former East German athletes subjected to a state-sponsored doping regime open up about the long-term effects of steroid abuse and warn Russian athletes, and any others around the world, that the price of doping is just too hi...
The effect of thinner air at 600m elevation is marginal, although it was dead calm that day. The track surface then was rekortan (sp?) I believe, since then it's been replaced with the faster for sprinting Mondo, perhaps Koch would have run 47.50 or faster on today's tracks.
...and hundredths of seconds are marginal. ...but a big clue to me...that altitude or something was going on up in Canberra, was Vladykina's performance in the same race. Just 22 years old...2 years away from her World Championship gold, 3 from her Olympic gold - at the 1988 Olympics no less - same Olympics where she out-ran Florence Griffith-Joyner !! ...7 years away from her Olympic Silver etc etc - YET...at 22, in Canberra, Olga ran easily her fastest ever 400 meters time. ...as did Marita - also by a huge margin. I don't know about the wind in the 400 or the surface, but I do know that the whole track is gone now, gone with the wind.
The main stadium track is gone but the warm-up track is still there. In 1985 both tracks had a 'softer' surface than what the warm-up track has now. The old surface was liked by the distance runners. The Mondo now at the warm-up track is harder and considered faster by sprinters. What time would Koch have run on today's tracks and with today's spikes?

What time ? 48.14 seconds for the 400. - That's with modern track, shoes, drugs, training - AND with the involvement of Naser. Didn't they put a man on the moon and blow up a few women ? Anyway, Salwa Eid Naser showed what can be done in modern times and it's 48.14. I wonder if Marita Koch-Miser has moved with the times and is now covered with tattoos and piercings in Rostock ? - Maybe next year in 2025, Marita can celebrate the 40th anniversary of her historic world record, by walking the adjacent warm-up track in Canberra. Perhaps she could walk her Schnauzer, Sabine for the full 400 meters as a commemoration.
There are actual written records regarding Koch's drug use, as well as German court cases describing the drugs that all East German athletes were forced to take in the 1970's and 1980's when Koch was competing.
There is no "sentiment", there are only facts. And the facts are that Koch was 100% taking performing enhancing drugs.
"poisoned organs"...maybe...but those successful GDR women athletes were obviously in on it all - the steroids and so on. They lied then, most still lie now. ....so they probably are also the type of characters who would lie about side-effects that aren't true...for cash or sympathy. I like Martina Hellmann...clearly the greatest woman's discus thrower ever...but might have strategically NOT gone for the world record - perhaps to not draw unwanted attention to herself. At least 2 of her 3 longest throws were fairly crucial. She needed to throw far, competition-wise. ...in fact she was 2nd place in her second furthest throw. ...but 2nd was enough in that case. Also she got married. I like that.

Damn, the one Krieger person in that film was a bio female, eventually took so many hormone drugs she had to have surgery and become a male, then eventually married the Krause bio woman who was also in the film.
