Does anyone out there still not think he can run a 1:48? I gotta think if he were to give this event a full effort for 8-12 weeks....done deal and perhaps 1:47 would not be impossible. Can we all just agree now he is not limited to a 1:52 and he could crush Cade Flatt this very minute in the 4 lapper?

The only thing his 1:49 proves is that he DEFINITELY CANNOT RUN 3:48 right now.

What if he ran a 1:47 with more work on the 800 as this seems more likely now? He's just getting thrown into this race for a workout at a conference championship meet. I'm done doubting Nico Young
I don't disagree but let's not pretend like he doesn't have some wheels. 3:51 is still pretty damn good
According to this he would be best in the Marathon about 2:05.01 (Rounding Up .66, So It would be An Ameican and North American Record and 7 Seconds off the Brazillians 2:04.51 Western Hemisphere Record

Yes because ONE RACE is surely an all-encompsssing, definitive, absolute measure of your ability at a particular distance. One. 1. Thats all it takes to know.
Also he clealrly gets better with distance. His performances won't scale linearly.

Just as a reminder, Rupp had lifetime PRs of 1:49.87/3:50.92/12:58.90
Just as a reminder, Nico Young has run 1:49.61/12:57.14 in January/February of his senior year of college
Mike Smith is probably the best coach in the country right now, and Nico is one of the best talents in recent memory. He's coming along strong for the Olympic year, and he's running some absurd times. I err on the side of Nico being closer to 3:50, but he dropped a 12:57 in January, so I'm not gonna be putting limits on him.
To be fair, the best distance coaches in the country nearly always just happen to be at high altitude locations. The altitude makes them seem to be much better coaches than anyone else, but it's an illusion in most cases. I don't think it's an illusion in the case of Mike Smith, but he definitely has a huge advantage coaching in Flagstaff.

And to be fair there are other coaches at altitude that don’t get near the improvements out of less talent than Mike Smith. If you got it, make the best of it.

Morans.
Nor does an occasional few races only using them as workouts. Look no further than Alan Webb. I would still have loved to have seen him give 36 months of strict prep to the 5000. Instead he dicked around and ran what? 13:10? At that time….that was pretty pimp.
