I've got a time qualifier for NYC Marathon from a race in another state. Anybody know what my chances are of getting into the race?

From the experience of some of my teammates, pretty low chances, unless you run the time in a NYRR race or really crushed the qualifier (my teammates run a 10 min qualifier and did not get in). Precedence is given to athletes that got a qualifier in a NYRR race and in the past years these took most/all of the available spots.
From 2025, however, only marathon times will be accepted as qualifiers, so things may change.
Thanks. I know it's a longshot. I thought previously it was first come first served for time qualifiers. I remember folks saying there were issues with the queue in recent years? This year it's based on time, just like Boston. I haven't found any data related to TQ's.
yeah I've over the last couple years a lot of people upset that their non-NYRR time qualifier was rejected.
thing is...NYRR does a few things to keep the marathon a local race. This is just one of them. There are others.
Last yea I got into the time qualifier queue about 10min before it opened and it took about 45min before I got a turn to register, site was glitchy as hell too. I think trying to get into the queue WAY before it opens might be worth a shot. I got an email from NYRR later telling me that the queue was filled so I was put into the general lottery.
Also, I'm a nyc native and have been racing in NYRR races for two decades and still got "rejected" with a 1:14 non-NYRR HM qualifier last year. They need to expand their metrics if trying to keep the race local...
someone correct me if i'm wrong but I believe NYC marathon basically uses the same process as Boston for non-NYRR races, filling up spots based on time priority, but if you run an NYRR race you can still qualify for marathon using the NYC marathon or any half-marathon and you automatically qualify without needing a time buffer, for example, you could run the Brooklyn or staten island half and qualify by 1 second and be guaranteed the NYC marathon because it's an NYRR race.
I'm sure international runners do the United airlines half and brooklyn half partly for that reason (in addition to the popularity of the races)
The impression that I got was that there was no time priority for non-NYRR qualifiers, it was first come first serve. You're correct about everything else, you're guaranteed entry as long as you sneak in under the qualifier in a NYRR race.
In the past I believe that was the case and people complained about the site issues because of downtime, server slows, etc., but seems they changed it this year too with the marathon vs. HM qualifier:
Just read this on the NYRR time qualifier page now: "Once the application period for Non-NYRR Time Qualifier entries has closed, NYRR will review the applications submitted. If the number of applications exceeds the number of spots available, entry will be granted to the applicants in each age and gender category with the fastest qualifying times. Those accepted will have their credit card charged and will be notified of their acceptance via email. Those who are not accepted will be moved into the non-guaranteed general entry drawing for another chance to be accepted into the race."
What would be helpful for the future is if NYRR announces what the actual cutoff time is from Non-NYRR races below the standard like Boston does each year

I don't see why your chances would be low. They set the time qualifier and if you meet it, you're in unless they have a lot of time qualifiers and they go in rank order per category. I've made it into the NYC marathon this way on various occasions.

If the TQ slots were filled in 30 minutes, the demand is greater than the supply. That appears to be the reason for the change this year. Just wish we knew how big this supply and demand numbers are. I hope at least NYRR will share this data going forward. Good to know you were able to get in previously, gives me hope that I've got a chance! I've got a half marathon qualifier with 1:14 buffer. Let the game begin!
It used to be Sub 3:00 got you in.
Did it ask you to submit your race results when signing up? I applied but it never asked me.

It doesn’t sound like you applied as a time qualifier. You might want to double check. There’s also a lottery but I think it’s extremely low odds of getting in that way.
What are the time qualifying standards? When is the deadline to enter?
Will a 2:35 masters male qualify?

Is the NYRR site broken? Why don’t you let us know what is so confusing about how they explain the entry criteria, it should be pretty clear unless English isn’t your first language.

Only reason previously your teammate wouldn't have got in is he didn't apply quick enough.
This is the first year of a potential cut off.
Anyone know when we'll hear about the time cutoff or if we were accepted? The window closed on Wednesday last week, so I'm assuming it won't be that long.

According to Facebook NYCM help group, non-NYRR time qualifiers will get notified on 28th of March. The group admin had asked this from NYRR.

If you want to run it in 2025, Sign up quickly for the Staten Island Half before it sells out, and get the time qualifier there.
No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
