Probably has something to do with consistently getting last place in conference track meets while throwing nearly the whole budget towards a mediocre cross country program that doesn’t win conference championships or qualify for NCAAs.
Most college AD's don't care about the place the XC/ TF team comes in at the end of the season. They want #'s of athletes, and for there to no issues with the team. If they do that, the coach is safe from being let go. Should it be like that? That is up for discussion. But that is the world we live in.
Sadly I have heard they aren’t specifically looking at distance coaches to replace him. From what I have gathered they will clean house. Always the possibility they change course.
When assistants are elevated at the DI level/when a program hires new coaches to keep its previous direction, it is usually done after a long time coach retires in good standing with the admin.
That does not seem to be the case at BSU. Not connected with the program in anyway, but I would assume they want a fresh start, better T&F results, and willing to look at coaches outside of the distance events.
Anyone know if there is more to the story?Change.org wrote:Change.org wrote:On November 9, 2023, Justin was wrongfully terminated by the Athletic Director Glen Crawford for taking his Cross-Country team to dinner at Olive Gar...
Justin was let go because he was difficult to get along with. He kept pushing buttons with administration, and never followed their guidance. He did what he wanted and argued when he was confronted.
The new coach that was hired in January was fired recently because he lied on his resume. He arrived on campus and did not know the basics of how to create effective workouts. The Director of XC/TF let him go this week.

???
I suppose that is sad if you are a track coach at a MW school. If BSU has some scholarships and athletes in some other areas under new leadership, they may not be the program everyone views as the easy win.

Why is this sad?
You can definitely tell this comment came from someone who only cares about distance running and nothing else. These types of folks should not be allowed to be head coaches of a track team.

I've said this many times here but the problem is the NCAA's stupid scholarship structure... XC being a subset of track. This is what creates this distance vs track situation... not the coaches. Separate the scholarship structure and the problem is solved. Track will become about track and XC will become about XC.. at all schools. Fire away, now!
You said whole a lot of nothing. It's one sided we are talking what the director did. This ain't high school where you get to Ignite all the PTA parents and kids to complain on the coach to get him fired. This is Duke University, they will Consultant with their legal team to make sure they don't end up in a wrongful termination lawsuit. You have to make sure that the complaints are valid and rise to the level of termination. News flash plenty of ADs are dealing with complaints and whining from distance runners. Not sure if they will pull the trigger and fire a guy who won conference 2023, before you say it was because of distance go look at the results from all the success he has had on the track since taking over. He might be a jerk, mean, rough, assertive etc.. We have employment laws for a reason. I assume they will look for a distance minded Director because any other Director won't put up with the whining. Distance runners have made a name for creating drama and toxicity on a team. Just researching the number of coaches fired because of distance drama
Speaking from personal experience, athletes from any discipline will have something to complain about displeasure in the coach’s leadership style or training philosophies. Regardless of a coach’s effectiveness to perform their duties, sometimes all it takes is one person with a toxic personality, a narcissist, to really ruin a group of people’s perspective of a coach. Nowadays there’s overcompensation for catering to the needs of students, regardless if they provide ungrounded claims to admin.
I can’t wrap my brain around why people here can’t understand and support other coaches knowing that the job involves battling all kinds of sh** from multiple fronts - lack of support from admin, budgetary constraints, team drama, etc.
I completely agree with this! Any student-athlete can say anything they want to about a coach. Anything. 3-4 can hate a coach for any reason at all and complain and make things up! Most AD's will not deal with this and let the coach go in order to keep things quiet and not draw attention. It is happening all over and more and more often these days. Then the internet and websites like this make it even worse! People come on here and bash on coaches and spread rumors that usually are not true! Not sure why? What do you get out of coming on here and bashing a coach or saying things that you "heard" about a coach? you do not. You hide behind a keyboard. Do this with your name and there will be a slander defamation lawsuit! Lets be better! Let's build each other up! Report job openings here and not why you think or heard someone is leaving a school or program! Get's old and is immature and can wreck a coaches career/life and reputation.
