The kids on my son's team are basically running just a bit faster than we did in the 1990s. It seems like the 4:30 miler is now maybe 4:25 and the 4:20 guy maybe 4:15. The 10:00 3200 guy is maybe running 9:40 and the 9:35 guy is running 9:20 now. But lots of guys on his team are running 4:50 to well over 5:00 and 10:00-11:00 3200s. Not a small school or a small team either.
When I see his team, I think "yeah, this makes sense. Shoes, training methods, etc have progressed... so 5 seconds for the 1600 and maybe 20 for the 3200 is appropriate". But then you look nationally and I realize a couple things.
1) my son's team is drastically underperforming, year in and year out
2) The above assumption of what the progression of times should look like is clearly off at a national level.
How are so many kids running sub 9:00? Are they all running like 60-80mpw their sophomore year on? Its not like kids are more talented.
Again, I get the shoes... but the shoes didn't take the best high schoolers running 9 flat 25 years ago to 100 kids running sub 9:00 now (or whatever it ios). It has to be the training. And what is it that is better about the training today? Is there a formula these kids are following?
