Dumb question, how is this a WR? Does point-to-point not count? I remember Verzbicas ran 3:56 on the roads in high school ~13 years ago and obviously the 5th Avenue record is much faster
In the big picture this win is terrible for him. It’s only going to encourage him to keep running road races. He is never going to develop the tactical acumen he needs to do well on the track.
That is a dumb question. It's a world record because it was run on a legit mile course.
That also means that Verzbicas 3:56 was a faster run than Centros Olympic win in 3:50 for a 1500.
Dumb point to bring up since this was a championship style race and not a time trial. Kessler just destroyed some 3:31 and under runners. He could have gone 3:47 if it was a time trial. Good grief
Was this a weak field relative to the other races? Yes. Especially considering how deep/competitive the men’s 15/mile was this year.
That being said, any of those guys were most likely offered a spot and turned it down.Hobbs showed up, freakin won the thing, broke the record and made 60k.
He looked super strong and raced confidently that last 200m. I think people are critical because they thought he’d be making track teams right after turning pro, but he is only 20. Like someone mentioned before, he set PRs in every distance this year. Won a couple races. The 15 in LA where he beat Cooper made him look like a legit team contender. If he can iron out some consistency and stay healthy, there’s no reason to not believe he’ll be around for awhile. And this was an awesome way to end the season. He looked pumped!
Of course he is technically "world champ", his point was that it's a weak event because few of the top runners were there. It's like the women's steeplechase 20 years ago when few of the top 3000/5000 athletes were running it and the WR (9:40ish) was 90 seconds slower than the 3000 flat WR.
World champion? Absolutely. Congrats to Hobbs? Absolutely. Best miler in the world? Hell no, not yet.

What a Debbie Downer Turd Johnathon Gault is.
Couldn't wait to pi$$ on Kessler's achievement pointing out who wasn't there.

Not a dumb question, I believe they only just began recognizing an official World Record for the road mile. Kind of like the situation a few years back where Julien Wanders held the road 5k record in 13:2x.
Though Fifth Age wouldn’t be eligible anyway since it’s net downhill
Seems more than a bit silly for someone barely ranked in the top 100 (Kessler is currently ranked 88th in the 1500m) to be a world champion. Letsrun blurb makes it clear that his "world record" in the road mile was a joke" but it seems like calling Kessler a "world champion" should also be joke. Great race by Kessler in winning the Riga World Athletics Road Running Campionships, but this is nothing close to the magnitude of Centrowitz winning a gold medal. Yes, go read and call Kessler the winner of the World Athletics Road Running Championahips, but let's not joke and call him a world champion.
I am bout to be calling Kessler the world champ for the next year and there's nothing you can do to stop me
Reynold Cheruiyot was in there at least. Talk about a soft field and soft wr. But I'm glad to see him finish the season with a very nice prize. Hopefully, next season he will be in the mix for medals.

Yeah, how dare he analyze the situation realistically, as is his job.
An article that didn't point out the context would be (correctly) regarded as dishonest for what it left out.

Only a joke if it ain't true. Anyone could have showed up and they didn't. He deserves the palmares.
