I suppose we believe what we want to believe, with much of our views influenced by likes, desires, culture, surroundings, and just plain bias. Unfortunately, it was more than just one individual (mark fountain) that reported aouita encouraging drug use for performance enhancement and recovery. There were dozens upon dozens of reports from Australian athletes at the time, with IAAF turning a blind eye (remember that Diack was president during this time). I enjoyed Aouita’s exploits as much as anyone- the first under 13:00, especially. In fact, I was in the stands to see him crack Rono’s legendary 3k record. Having been around the sport for so long, I’m also not naive to think his incredible runs were fueled only by couscous and a passion for the sport. Amazing athlete to watch.
I thought this bump was about the recent NCAA hire of Said to VMI. He was offered the job and moved to VMI where the honor code (do not lie, cheat or steal) is considered sacred.
Aouita moved to VMI over Christmas break and has already left the area and program without ever coaching the athletes.
