Out of any of the greatest winning streaks out there, we are here to cover one that happened not too long ago in the NCAA track world.TY for watching, subbin...
Pitiful. He was supposed to lead a strong showing by Americans. Couldn't have done worse.
My biggest issue is that he's so arrogant and has a bad attitude. Didn't talk to Lewis, didn't seem like he was happy to be there at all. Maybe some problems with coaching?
If he doesn't want to show joy in representing the country, he should leave.
Eight-hundred meters is humbling. We need four turn stagger.
I can't imagine how horrible a four turn stagger would be. Lane 8 would be at a tremendous disadvantage, for example.
Were you going to say:
1) Unaware of pace;
2) Unaware of position relative to opponents;
3) Not fair to lane 1 and lane 8 athletes?
I never was on a swim team but I have been to many club swim & dive meets and high school swim & dive meets.
High school 200yd & 500yd freestyle swimmers know their pace and they can get a sense of their position relative to competitors even though then cannot see them well. Same thing for club swimmers, same events plus 200m & 400m freestyle. It is not uncommon for swimmers to set personal bests in heats. We would see the same, 800m, T&F.
Pace: Elite 800m runners do: 12 x 200m @ 26 seconds or faster; 9 x 300m @ 39 seconds or faster. Elite men know what sub-1:44 pace feels like. Elite women do 12 x 200m @ 29 seconds or faster. Elite women know what sub-1:56 pace feels like.
We went from 440 yard dash prior to 1960s, a straight line, everyone fought for lane 1 immediately. Nineteen-sixties through 1970s, 440 yard dash, one turn stagger. We heard comments in 1979 & 1980 when we went from 440 yard dash with one turn stagger to 400m with 2 turn stagger: Not fair for gals & guys in lane 1 & 8. Too tight of turn in lane 1 compared to other 400m dash athletes. Lane 8 athletes are blind to competitors. Four-hundred meter dash athletes will not know their position relative to opponents.
It worked out for 400m dash athletes. We used to hear about thirty years ago from Steve Scott and some others: Bring back the mile. I never recall Steve Scott saying, Bring back 440 yard dash!

It would be a different race. Not better or worse. Just different. A time race might be interesting to watch but I have a feeling most fans would be confused.
Love Harris, but I can’t remember the last time he beat Hoppel. Hoppel is really consistent. But all of our 800m runners get scared vs international competition. Can’t say the same for the 1500m, those guys are always competing.
So arrogant, why didn't he do an interview with Lewis? He just walked right by him! Where's the love of his country? If he doesn't like it, he should leave.
His attitude is all wrong. He's an arrogant loser.
You have been running around this forum today badmouthing Hoppel. Curious as to what are your credentials. Sport, professional, life. Fill us in.
Terrible execution, let himself get boxed immediately rather than having any decisive strategy
I disagree. He couldn't do anything because he clearly didn't have the legs. He got dropped. 600-700 and 700-800 splits were both the worst in the field. So, I'd say bad day, overcooked body/training, past peak or something along those lines.
A top level runner like Hoppel who isn't feeling it on race day can have a result that isn't up to their usual standards. I like to remember he is one of the US Team athletes and it says a lot to just make a US Team. He's young, fast, and not washed up.
