That's such bullsh*t. I'm from Nebraska and just 30 minutes ago the news was talking about him advancing, and now this! So disappointing. I'm sure he'll be back next year for the Olympic trials, but I would have loved to see him make it this year.
You can see his foot cross the line just after the start. You can also see the official, down low, hands on knees, and drool out of the corner of his mouth.
The problem with these situations is that the punishment (DQ) seems so out of proportion with the crime (an infinitesimal advantage gained in the first 100m). This seems especially unfair in the 800, when most athletes aren't trying to break first anyway.
Why not just add a time penalty? You could make it big enough (say 0.5 seconds) that it would still be a deterrent. Especially in prelims. Especially in national team selection meets. Can you imagine throwing a tennis player out of Wimbledon for a foot fault?
Time penalty is the dumbest suggestion I have ever heard. Everyone know the penalty is a DQ. Simply don't run on the line. It is very easy to not do. And since most are not trying to save time and break first, they should have no problem running nowhere near the line.

That everyone knows the rule doesn’t make it a good rule or the punishment reasonable. It’s totally disproportionate to the ‘offence’
They should treat a foot fault like whereabouts failures imo. You do it once, you're fine, you do it In 2 races during a season... whoops. A third time? Dq. Sure maybe it would be a pain to keep track of but man this is harsh and for really no reason at all. He probably swung wide at some point anyways and lost any advantage he gained. So sad and I don't even know the man
Thought you were kidding about the official so I pulled up the video and it’s exact as you wrote but worse. Official is 30 meters away, called a foot foul from behind, at a bad angle, on someone who’s running at near full speed, and he just happens to look at that runner at that second. Nonsense—official went looking for a foul and found it. And the video is too blurry, so you lose and the official wins. A referee like John Chapin never would have let a nonsense call like that DQ someone in a national championship.

You know what else is very easy not to do? Split infinitives. And yet, you did. People make inconsequential mistakes all the time, as you've just proved.
As a past participle, proven is the accepted form in Scotland and the preferred form throughout North America. Proved tends to be the word of choice in England, although even the British use proven on occasion. Some familiar phrases (like innocent until proven guilty) are readily accepted as correct by both American and British style guides.
