The public has spoken. They don’t find watching a bunch of skinny dudes and tiny women’ circle a track at a submaximal pace to be very entertaining.
The irony is that, from a participation standpoint, running has never been more popular. NYRR races have been selling out faster than they did prior to Covid.
isn't PARTICIPATION the aspect we should all be hoping grows??
why is "growing the sport" in terms of spectators, viewership, merchandising, advertising important to anyone other than those with a commercial/financial interest?
i think we would all love to see much better coverage of T&F available in the US, but "the sport" isn't a plant in our garden or a child in our nursery.

When participation grows it just means more overweight women in tutus showing up at the local 5K or half marathon, and more gallowalkers doing 6 hour marathons. It doesn't benefit the core participants for more of these people to show up.

Ideally, it should help as more hobby joggers means more running shoe sales which is what finances the sport.
The problem is that running in a local 5K is more fun than watching one on a track.
It was a Thursday night. Unless people are purposely taking a long weekend to watch the 5 day meet, I expected the Thursday attendance to be low. I think more people will show up for tonight.
they need to stop doing USAs in oregon. accommodations are garbage and it is too difficult and expensive for travel.
This is the biggest issue. Hotels are slim pickings and they way overpriced. Portland is 90 min away, so it's not ideal to stay there either. It's a great venue, but Eugene is just too much of a sh--thole.

who are these "core participants" and why should we be especially concerned about "benefiting" them?

Oregonians don't go to track meets in the Summer. They go camping, fishing, hiking, climbing, rafting. The mountains, the coast. This is nothing new.
Marty Liquori was right. Eugene is the Track Capitol of Lane County.

Id like to watch the races. Are they posted anywhere? I didn’t see anything but interviews on YouTube 🙁.

It's a 4 day meet not 5. Must be public school math.
Yeah, those Thursday night NFL games never have anyone watch them. Same thing with the 40,000 people who attended the random Yankees game last night on a Thursday night.
Nike continues with the myth that Eugene is the "Track town" of the USA. When only a few 1000 people show up to the showcase event of your sport, it's not the epicenter of anything. The meet needs to move to a metropolitan area with reasonable flights and hotel rooms that also is within driving distance for many interested people. When you see the attendance figures this weekend of a few 1000 people in attendance, how many will not be coaches/friends/family/agents/etc? My guess is next to none.
