Jakob demolished the record when most people thought he'd barely squeak below it at best. Conversions also rank it better than most of the other middle distance outdoor records. In addition, I don't think anyone else is going to bother challenging this for a long time due to the new time and distance.
Girma ran equivalent to what he looked like he could do when he set his indoor record. He met expectations of what a WR would look like from him. I think some of his jumps looked a bit funky near the end with a bit of stumbling. He's also got a major competitor who may try to snipe it out from under him soon.
Faith's time is still amazing, but I think the disparity between her last few laps and the closing lap makes me think a lot was left on the table for future attempts. I think another race between the Faith/Gidey could easily be another WR if things shakeout a bit differently. It's hard to rank it highly when sub 14 is so close and seemingly achievable.
Kipyegon is #1 because of her 1500m WR last week and the fact that it's the 5000m, so not as obscure as the 2 mile or steeple. Not saying the steeple is *that* obscure, but the average Joe knows what a 5k is vs. a steeplechase.
Jakob was most impressive but not by a long shot. 1) men’s records are always more impressive than women’s records, males under 18 years old can run doped up women’s WRs with suboptimal training, no supplements, and no money on the line. 2) Jakob averaged a time equivalent to a 7:21.9 3k. 3) Jakob got a poor start, too many people bunched up, maybe half a second improvement on optimal start. the steeplechase record is almost as impressive.
No one is saying SC isnt highly competitive. SC races consistently have stacked fields; however, the guys running steeple are running SC for a reason. It is their best chance to win.
