I ran for a decent D1 school from 2016-2020 (10k PR about 29 min). Mileage was typically in the 75-100 mile range. I stopped running after I finished undergrad and for the next 3 years while going back for more school. I was trying to juggle going to school full time while working night shifts at the hospital and there was just no extra time to run. So it has been about 3 years of a relatively sedentary lifestyle. I was walking maybe 2 miles every other day for those 3 years. I’ve also probably put on 30 pounds but am definitely not overweight (I was underweight while running in college).
I was talking to a guy in one of my classes the other day about running. He also ran competitively in college. He said he took 2 years off and was never able to get back to the level of fitness he had in college. He basically argued that it is impossible to get back to a previous fitness level after taking 2 (or more) years off of running. I’ve been running since high school and up until 2020, had never taken more than a week off every 4 months or so. I guess I’m finding it hard to believe, but I could be completely wrong.
If you are that sedentary for three years, it is possible to return to a previous level of fitness? I have one more year of school but will have time to run since I have saved up enough to no longer have to work while attending classes until I graduate in 2024. I’m 25 now. Is returning to my old level of fitness a realistic dream to have? And if so, how long would it take?
