I’m assuming that the College guys have not been fed a burrito diet. I believe that this is central to Jerry’s training philosophy. Without that “protein” supplement, he may be facing a challenge
IIRC, twenty eight individuals per gender. I don't know if that number has changed. That's why at the conference meet athletes who can cover more than one event are particularly valuable.
Jerry Quote from the article: “I had a meeting with the team and I said, we're not in it for the team title this year," Schumacher said. "We're not and it's not going to happen. But just because we're not in that position, doesn't mean we take our ball and go home. It means we set the standard for the future. … We’re going to fight and compete and try to put try to put the most points on the board that we possibly can.”
Cool but from the lack of entries in many distance events where bodies are seemingly there, I don't really see the "fight and compete" part...
As I mentioned in an earlier post Washington has six entrants in the men's 1500 final, with Gormley the only Oregon entrant. Besides Cook who else among those not entered could have taken on the Huskies, all of whom are quality runners? Abdinasir Hussein ran 28:57.08 earlier this year, but the 10K field was strong and I don't think he would have cracked the top eight. Quincy Norman is entered in the 5K along with guys who ran earlier in other events. Norman has only run 14 flat this year so his only hope of grabbing a point is if he has a great race and runners from other teams withdraw because they've already run other events and are not needed in the 5K. And Oregon has three mid 8:50 guys in the steeple only because the competition is not as strong as the other distance events. Bottom line- the men's distance corps at Oregon is very weak this year. The hope of course is with the continued development of the youngsters and redshirted runners and the addition of a good recruiting class next year's distance group will be much stronger.
Distance guys not entered: Luke Affolder - (3:46 this season) Benjamin Balazs Sebastian Barclay Caleb Brown (29:26 this season) Elliott Cook (has raced unattached) Josh Edwards Angus Fölmli James Harding Rheinhardt Harrison Abdinasir Hussein (28:57 this season) Tomas Palfrey Benjamin Reynolds Jeffery Rogers Joshua Schumacher Aiden Smith Cameron Stein Kutoven Stevens
That list - including his own son - is amazing. Now in another thread, I just defended Jerry but do feel like he needs to give an explanation to the media. Is there any local media left or should we reach out.
There is no AD on planet earth that would allow this, ESPECIALLY at Oregon. They would ask why they are paying a coach (Jerry) hundreds of thousands of dollars to willfully not be competitive at conference, which is the meet they care most about anyway. Are you really suggesting that a fifteen year win streak is about to end because Jerry didn’t want to enter guys to compete? Then what are they paying him for???? A school famous for its distance program not racing their guys at the conference is an embarrassment and inexcusable, and if I were the AD, I’d have a meeting with him first this Monday morning demanding and explanation.
Rob Mullens is in a tough spot, because the real AD is up in Hillsboro counting his money with Mullen's nuts in a jar somewhere.
It shouldn't be a controversial statement to say that a coach's job is to take athletes where they are and make them better. Part of that process is racing, at whatever level the athlete happens to currently inhabit.
I get that for some of these guys, they are racing at the very highest level of the NCAA and it is a stepping stone to running professionally. But for many, college track is as big as it's going to get and trying to make the final at Pac 12s or running a PB is still a big deal. It's pretty damning that Jerry doesn't understand this and is just opting out en masse. Some of these guys, instead of running PBs this year or running at conference, are just going to blow a year of eligibility next year as cannon fodder for his blue chip recruits with rabbiting in Oregon jerseys at Hayward the extent of their racing experience.
There were a fair few people saying that Jerry was a bad hire because he was a control freak, too far out on the spectrum to interact productively with this many people, and was not going to engage with the community in the way that Eugene demands ... and here we are.
The mental gymnastics some letsrunners are doing to defend this guy is hilarious. Dude sucks at coaching college and Oregon track just had its worst two seasons in recent memory. Inexcusable with the talent and resources they have

The women just beat USC for the team title. I think they underperformed in the 1500 and 800 and showed little in the other distance events. The team title was basically won by their throwers, with some decent sprint/hurdles/jumps results. The men didn't have any top tier entrants beyond Williams in the 100. With the PV not quite done looks like Cal will pass them and they'll finish 6th. I don't expect to see them finish this low again, although they have a lot of work to close the gap on Washington (and USC in the overall team race).

Women won and men took 4th holding out almost all of their runners as pointed out. Next year (and for years to come), Oregon is going to sweep men's and women's, with dominant distance squads, based on their recruiting. Somehow you think the dude sucks at coaching. I'm sure you have all the answers. They should have hired you.

i know Robert Johnson did some f’ed up sh** when he was there but those teams were WINNING and it feels so different to see them not be dominant especially in the Pac 12. They would regularly win all the distance events up through last year and take team titles
Jerry should honestly be sh** on for what he’s doing, especially when he doesn’t talk to the media. Does he have some master plan? Oregon got 6TH today for men. Cal Berkeley who has one of the worst P5 athletic departments ever beat them? Robert Johnson come back!
