Mantz thrives in races where everyone is hurting, which is exactly what Boston is after the hill. Hard to pick anyone other than him with no Rupp in the race.
I’m seeing 6-7 mph with gusts of ~15, with perfect temps. Not ideal but if they can get in a pack running the right pace, might not be such a big deal.
Conner Mantz talks about running against Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge, the greatest marathoner of all time, at the Boston Marathon.WATCH the ABC News Livestream: ht...
Kipchoge is the sun that all the other elite marathoners orbit around. It’s not easy to defeat somebody who you hold in awe. If you think that just applies to Mantz, you are wrong. It’s going to take more than the usual mental fortitude for the other elite Kenyans, Chebet or Kipruto to defeat EK. Even CJ might be too scared to run out in front of Kipchoge!!
BTW, Mantz is going to finish as top American, easily. He’s on another talent level than Fauble and the rest.

Mantz ran 2:08:16 on pancake flat Chicago when he said he was going to go out in 1:03 (went out in 1:03:45 - not that far off). Fauble ran 2:08:52 at Boston, which I think most would agree is a much more challenging course. Mantz may end up the top American, but it's not 'easily' and he is even with Fauble.
That said, I'll take the field. True, Chalenga, and McDonald all seem fit. McDonald is my dark horse pick.
While a complete and total bad-ass and grinder, Mantz uses a LOT of energy when he runs, I don't think, after watching Chicago, that he'll turn into the next Rupp in the marathon. Fauble gets the pick here from me. With the women... I don't know who will have the best day. Thats a tough one. Bates is probably my pick, but Rojas has grit,. so she could absolutely surprise and go by Bates when the hills gang up on Bates' quads.
Either way, this a going to be a great, great Boston and I guarantee that the TV coverage will be awful.
Can I put any money on the TV coverage missing huge amounts of the actual races, including at least 2 key breaks by focussing on the wheelchair races??
