So who was the "worst" XC champion in the past 40 years? Mark Scrutton, David Kimani and , Keith Kelley are the ones that I don't think have multiple titles(including track) or other top 5 XC finishes. And I would have to Google some of them as I sure don't have all the results of past 40 years committed to memory. Those might be worst but man the worst XC champ is really good.
You can do the same thing of the 5/10k and very few are guys that you can say we're huge upsets. Make list of 5 names before the race and almost all of them would have been there
Pretty sure it’s Keith Kelly. Kimani ran 13:10 and won the NCAA 5000. Scrutton ran 3:38/7:50/13:32/28:23 and a 27:55 road 10k. Kelly’s PRs are 3:40/4:01/7:56/13:50/28:32 - it’s kinda like if today’s Leo Young won NCAA XC.

You’re wrong about Kimani (RIP). He was legit and won multiple NCAA titles.
”Kimani won the NCAA 1999 cross county title; the indoor 3,000 and 5,000 meter runs in 2000 and 2001 and the 5,000 meter outdoor championship in 2002.”
I'll admit that I wasn't much thinking about the super early runners, like from the 50s and 60s and stuff, but I'm sure the real answer is probably there. 35 mins in the 10k for 6th at NCAAs is pretty hilarious lol.
I can understand an argument for Beamish, but I feel like he just goes unnoticed.
I do agree that Cheserek's pro career is very underwhelming compared to his days at Oregon. But he hasn't completely fallen off the face of the earth... Definitely an honorable mention, though. I still think he could make a comeback. Maybe.
Fleet is definitely in the conversation too. But along with Cheserek, its not that he's a bad runner. Just had injury issues and never was able to put it together completely as a pro.
This is insane, bro. Did you pick this on purpose? Lol!
That was an incredible find on Gdoe's part. What an insane turn of events.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed it. I just randomly chose 1952 and the rest is due to having had a few minutes and some curiosity. Since they have an award in his name at Wisconsin, I am sure some Badgers have heard of him.
And then a few years later after that, they parole the killer of the fiance even though he'd done another attack and been sent to death row. And guess what? He raped and killed again. I had no idea they were soft on crime way back then as well.
He later was paroled and moved to Texas, where he committed more rapes and was imprisoned again. In 2003, a DNA match was made between him and the 1978 murder of a 40-year-old Lafayette,CA mother. Armida Wiltsey went for a jog around the Lafayette Reservoir on Nov. 14, 1978. Deputies found her body that night a short distance from the jogging trail. She had been raped and strangled to death.
Miss Hipperson was a nurse at Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital who was strangled to death in her apartment at 3737 Los Feliz Blvd, Los Angeles. For two years, her murder was unsolved, until her killer,Daryl Kemp, committed a s...
Oh wow. This story is wilder and wilder. The killer's wife said has super gentle.
HIs parents claim everything changed when he got knocked unconcious in football. Could this be the first case ever of CTE? And his execution was stopped by future supreme court justice William Douglas.
Guy raped 11 different women. Crazy. Can someone tell me how this guy made a living when he's paroled? Seriously. Like how do you have money? Who hires you?
This is an interesting blog post from the Daily Mirror that we thought might be of interest to you. This article is a strong reminder of how important the role of Parole Board Commissioner is to p…

And I would contend you’d have to go back to the 60s to find a winner who was “worse.”
Counterpoint: Kelly was an amazing cross country runner who was not nearly as good at track. That race was the most miserable cross county race I've ever experienced. And he beat Kimani and Torres for the title.
Just looking at XC, I would take KK over Rohatinsky every time.
Disagree with those saying Keith Kelly. Super talented guy who was a beast at cross but could never put together full seasons due to multiple serious injuries. Definitely not the worst - maybe the most injury prone.
This thread should be renamed “who won an ncaa title then got injured a lot and / or a bad coaching situation after college”. Before posting negatively about elites, each poster should state their greatest running accomplishment.
Rojo - I believe the killer Darryl Thomas Kemp is still alive, currently age 87.
I know California has done some whacky s$% when it comes to being soft on crime, but I don't know how this guy was ever paroled in 1978 after being a convicted serial rapist and murderer. WTF. It only took him 4 months to rape/murder again when he was set free. Then in 1983 he broke into a house and raped/choked 6 women in Austin, Texas and received a life sentence.
Not sure what he did to make money after parole in '78, but I did read that he was a carpenter at the time of Marjorie Hipperson's murder. Horrible story.

In my OP I clarified I'm not looking to hate on people. I'm literally just curious about people that won an individual title even though, based on their ability, you'd never think they could do it. Not my fault if malicious people want to say hateful things. I ignore them and so should you.
