The driver did not have any known connection to the victim, identified as Michael John Mammone, an emergency room doctor at Providence Mission Hospital in Laguna Beach, officials said.
Dr Michael Mammone, 58, was cycling on the Pacific Coast Highway when he was run over by a white Lexus on Wednesday, and then stabbed by Vanroy Evan Smith, 39.
This is terrible. Possibly the driver thought he could avoid criminal penalties by killing the cyclist and escaping - no witness, assuming any witnesses didn't care or he could get away fast enough.

The article did say that there were witnesses, though. They detained the guy.
I've ridden in that area quite a bit. It can get really busy with traffic. I'll ride up Crown Valley or Thalia and Park to Top of the World. Because of incidents like this I don't enjoy riding on the roads as much as I used to. People are too preoccupied on their phones or whatever and not attentive to driving. I has gotten much worse in the last 10-15 years.
My guess is that there was some road rage involved. The driver probably cut off the cyclist/victim or got too close to him in some way and the cyclist flipped him the bird, yelled profanities at him, or whatever. The driver then freaked out. I used to do the same thing when I was younger but as I got older I wised up and decided it just wasn't worth it. A 180 pound guy on a 20-25 pound bike doesn't have a prayer against an enraged guy in a 2+ vehicle. The article said that the victim was 58. That is older than I am. If that is what happened I would have thought that the victim would have known better. I hope that the driver is made an example of.
I turn at the intersection heading south several times a week when riding.
You watch the video, the guy ran the red light and purposely hit the cyclist. There was no road rage as the cyclist had just turned onto that road. Guy got out and yelled anti white slurs “white privilege” stuff and stabbed him to death, also had BB gun with him.

I would personally NEVER ride where there is a lot of traffic...or really ANY traffic. Too many a$$holes who don't think bicycles belong on roads. Too many distracted or impaired drivers. Too many just bad drivers. I think it is foolish to ignore those realities. Also, why exercise where there is a lot of car exhaust?
That said, the driver in THIS story is out of his freakin' mind.

Yep, after seeing that, it's definitely a hate crime. The article said that the guy "was" an accountant so perhaps he was recently fired or laid off and saw a person that looked successful out on his bike. He then freaked out. I'm glad that the video did not show the impact.
i used to rid in that type of traffic fairly often. I still occasionally do but I just don't like to do it. It is unsettling to me. I'm not a big fan of gravel biking but I understand why it has become so popular after hearing about instances like this.

I don't think so. The cyclist was well ahead of the car at the intersection, and the car drove into the cyclist at full speed from behind as if the light wasn't red (it was). If there had been an encounter like you suggest, it would more likely happen that the car would be ahead after buzzing the cyclist, and then the cyclist catching up to the car at a red light flips the driver off. That doesn't leave room to ram the cyclist from behind. If there had been an encounter of that type earlier, there's no way the cyclist would allow the car to get behind him again and be a target a second time. (I'd bail off the road.)

I stopped biking on trafficked roads. Too many drivers using their cars as intimidation weapons. Middle fingers, passing by and braking, accelerating and zooming by as close as possible.

Nope. You will be wrong about this. Unless an incident at a bike race that lead to this was the dead person racially abusing and threatening the killer.

It's not really THAT big of deal if they do it towards other vehicles of similar size but using it as a weapon against cyclists is pure low class and horrifying.
For some reason some drivers get set off by any minor inconvenience on the road. Most of them don't even have an important destination such as work to get to on time, they're just driving leisurely to get food or something. Probably a sign of deep seated anger issues and entitlement. I do think many drivers feel entitled that they shouldn't be impeded in any capacity during their trip. I cam admit myself that I hate traffic impeders who are in cars. I'm not one of those losers who gets mad when I see a cyclist though because the driver has to, God forbid, slow down. Cyclists have am equal right to the road but a bunch of clowns legitimately have the belief that cyclists should not be allowed on the road.

Imagine if the victim was a black man here. The media would be all over it, worldwide media trying to label it a hate crime and begging or even paying off police to come out and call it racially charged so the media sickly makes a ton of money off of a guy dying. Sounds crazy but the sad reality is what I'm saying actually happens because the media whores out for ratings/money any means necessary.
As a runner in SoCal I have noticed in the past few years the speed of drivers has increased on all streets. I'm always on the lookout for distracted drivers on their cellphones, teens and tweens on electric bikes creating mayhem, and soccer moms scurrying about in their mini-vans oblivious to general safety protocols. It's just not safe in suburbia anymore.
