Should distance runners ever strength train with heavy weights or should they only use lift high rep / low resistance?

What's the purpose of your lifting? That will determine the plan.
My PT liked to say "if you can do it more than 10 times, it isn't heavy enough...", but we were trying to address a glaring weakness. This wasn't about tonining, it was all about building strength!
During my final season as a collegian, I would lift with reps of up to 25, thinking I was toning. Don't get me wrong I was tone and stronger, but I was also building up unneccessary muscle mass. Now all I do is run and work on abs and have lost almost 10 lbs. since my last college season. Granted I also that much weaker in the upper body, but who cares I feel faster than ever.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
