Whitaker 3:19, Willis 2:02, Tanaka 4:43 got it done, Valby went out hard ~2:14 but faded to 4:35+ Gregory 429.x almost pulled it out
W&W's 3:19 and 2:02 are at or equal to the fastest 1200 & 800 DMR splits ever run by a college woman . . . faster than the splits run by OR back in 2017 in their 10:48.77 CR . . . per an article here:
With a strong anchor leg by freshman Katie Rainsberger in a time of 4:30.92, the women of Oregon beat the second place Villanova Wildcats by almost 10 seconds. Freshman from Australia Lilli Burdon split a 3:20.55 for 1200m, followed by a 53.76 for senior Ashante Horsley who handed off to NCAA 800m indoor and outdoor champion Raevyn Rogers who split 2:03.53.
Whittaker's mile time tomorrow afternoon will indicate if she should be the closer . . . which would put Tanaka or Lucy Jenks on the opening leg at NCAAs . . .

I still say they won't run this team at NCAA as little time between 800 and DMR and still not a lot between mile and DMR (and then have to run mile next day). Better for the team to try to in 800 and place high in mile if possible. Or try to go 1-2 in 800.
Varsity anchor work from Tanaka; in 3d behind Valby and Roe w 200 to go and crushed em both.
That’s a terrible take, after looking at the splits again. She was handed a 10sec lead over Roe and Valby, who then came up only 2secs short.
More accurate splits for Valby 30.5/33.5/33.8/35.1/35.1/35.1/35.6/35.3 Gregory did not gain an inch on Valby until 600 to go (where she was still the 4+ seconds behind Valby she started with) and then closed 34.3/33.2/33.2. Got these rewatching and stopping replay at the start finish line to record time. Gregory was off screen for her first 1000.
Thanks, will be interesting to see how Indoors plays out, with athletes in which events. Altitude situated distance athletes will have some advantage. Gregory’s PB’s:

That would be a pretty fast opening 200m for Valby in any case. As others have said she will be faster if she runs more even. I don't know that I see her as having more raw speed than Roe though, for example.
Gregory is good at pacing in these situations. Like how she ran down Savannah Shaw at Penn relays last year.

per Stanford twitter, W&W splits even faster than reported. . .
“That’s a terrible take, after looking at the splits again. She was handed a 10sec lead over Roe and Valby, who then came up only 2secs short”
Watch the race again. Having been caught and passed by two prominent NCAA D1 talents, Tanaka could have folded; she was in third place at the bell, but smoked them going away the last lap. It wasn’t even close. Any implied ‘moral victory’ of ‘faster split’ doesn’t matter when they hand out the medals.
“I think I noted Valby at close to 31 for her first 200 which is just too fast for her…”
“And Tanaka probably watched the mistake, and measured accordingly.”
Really? How exactly did she see that given her lead in the race?
That is right unless she was running with her head swivelled around looking back 30-50 m. Tanaka ran controlled and when they caught her responded. 70/73/71+/68+. Roe 66/68+/70/70. Valby noted before 64/69/70/71
