Josiah Tostenson broke the mile record with a 4:23 two years ago, but I don’t know what the 2-mile record is. Does it have to be run in an all middle-school race like Tostenson?
Fred Carley ran a 9:41 as a 13 year old in 1977 and I’m assuming that’s the de facto record.
Bodie Thomas set the NON meet record last year in an all middle school race in 9:45 as an 8th grader.
Someone elsewhere mentioned a 9:34 3200 Hunter Jones ran as an 8th grader in an all middle school race, which is insane. Faster equivalent than the other two though I know records typically don’t do conversions. Nice to see he certainly didn’t “peak too early” though.
There is no official record but the fastest I know of is Ryan Schoppe's 9:19 in 2016. No, that is not a typo. Marcus Reilly also 9:20 3200 in 2019 or 2020 along with 4:19 for the full mile indoors in 8th grade as well as a 2:27 1k.
9:41 is absolutely not the record probably a dozen or two have run faster than that.

I think you're a bit confused, nobody said Schoppe stalled out. The poster above me was talking about Hunter Jones, who certainly hasn't had a meteoric progression but he has shown steady improvement and had a good XC season this year. Doing well for someone who has been training hard for a long time.
Actually as I typed that I just remembered Keegan Smith ran 9:18 as an 8th grader in 2021. That is the fastest I know of, and to be honest I would be surprised if there were any faster performances.

Thanks. Couldn’t find a record of Schoppe’s time but it clearly lines up with his frosh cross country times and I could find verification for Reilly. Sad it takes searching several different results sites plus google to find this stuff.
The unofficial world record page usually is good for this stuff, but the 14 year old two mile record is now a frosh from last year who is very young for his age, so the normal 8th grade times got crowded out. Not sure who it was before him. Still curious where everyone got the “Tostenson broke the national record” headlines from, but guess anecdotal results plus the world record page for ages will have to do. Thanks.

The Tennessee 14-year old is quite good.https://live.pttiming.com/?mid=2306https://www.wvlt.tv/2021/04/15/young-track-star-going-the-distance/PS. Given the fact this is such a young athlete and we are posting this late...
It is a meaningless bar. Some states allow 7th graders to run varsity so may as well just consider them part of high school. And some kids are held back which makes a huge difference around age 14.

I followed a relatively normal progression - increasing mileage when I got older and faster, but I didn’t run insane volume or workouts so I’d improve a lot in college. Went from 15-20, 25, 35, 50 and had great results.
