During the Summer of 1993 he ran 8:12.68 and beat the best in the world at the time Moses Kiptanui to win the Bislett Games. The World Record at the time was 8:02.08. His college PR is 8:06.88 ran in 1993 or 1994. His first or second year of college. I don't know any freshman or sophomore who have ever run that fast. He had a bad race at the Kenyan Trials for the World Championship of 1993 and finished 4th. Richard was ranked 2 or 3 in the world at the end of 1993 track season. He then returned to USA to run one more year at Barton College in Kansas. He later took money and lost his college eligibility in the Summer of 1994 when he ran in some major track meets. I don't remember any college steeplechase athlete running this fast in history and at that level. He also ran those times in the Summer after a full college indoor and outdoor season that he would run numerous events at every meet to help his team. He would run everything from the 1k to the 10k in college.
