The elusive 4:05 at the state track meet. Lotsa runners had the ability to run under 4:05 but for some reason nobody can do it at that meet. Nathan Mountain comes to mind - problem was it was 92 degrees during his 1600 at state and he still ran 4:06.
The initial post Supertramp was responding to was regarding WN's school record - not the state meet record.

Good to see Mountain coming into form at UVA: he has gone sub-4 and is helping his school gain a moniker of Miler U.
I have this idea that Gabelman is going to have a stellar senior year, gaining an individual title or two, i.e., cross and/or the 1600m, and commit to . . . IU.

You know, it's interesting. As good as Gabelman is, he's not even a shoo-in at his conference for the XC title next fall.
Yes, he's won the last two OCC Capital meets, but it's been awfully close both times. Kilbourne's Smith went 9:05 a week ago, and he beat Gabelman a few times past fall. Weston Day from Scioto just ran 9:07.
And Kilbourne's Miller - OCC champ two years ago - was actually leading all three of these guys, charging out of the woods out front at Westerville North with 500 to go, before Gabelman and Smith ultimately caught and passed him right before entering the stadium. Even then, Gabelman barely held off Smith in the final sprint.
Lots of talent around for sure. But... only one 4:08 kid as of now. IU would be a great fit for Ben.
Nice race. Dyer, Gabelman, Johnson, and Trapp all turned in sub-4:12s.
Gabelman took the lead around 450m instead of sitting back longer. Did that hurt him in the end? Dyer took the lead with 500m to go, Gabelman didn't respond, and Dyer blew open too much of a gap for the strong kicker Gabelman to make up. It was a great race to watch.
I will be Captain Obvious here and say that that D1 1600m final in Columbus in June will be a barnburner. At this very moment I will still put my money on Ackley. Stay tuned!

Interesting. Massillon Jackson posted a 7:57 for the 4x800 and a 19:00 (4:45 avg.) for the 4x1600 with 8 different guys--respectable enough times at this point in the game. We'll see how this translates come November.

My money is now on Dyer at this point. He will outback Ackley which either way it plays out. He has to much natural speed from his 800's and showed last night that he can push the pace and negative split.
Interesting results for next year xc. Decent upset with Ozbun from Coffman beating Weston Day from Scioto in the 1600. Suprised that a 9:07 3200 runner lost to someone I haven't heard of until now.

They also have these 2 guys back Ehrsam - 11 - 16:43 Mastny - 10 - 16:48
I think that Ackley will realize that he was out kicked by Gableman at Wayne who was decisively beaten by Dyer at Mason.
So Ackley will go with the sure win in the 3200 so that he can get a state outdoor title.
But a lot can still happen between now and June with health, injuries, etc. Unless Ackley thinks that his relay split is legit.
I can see it going this way for sure. Thing is, Dyer looked very, very strong. That move at 500/600 was decisive. He may have a 4:04 in him too. So yeah, Ackley faces a much harder go in the 1600.
Ah. I see people's point about Dyer, but I don't think Ackley will back out of the 1600m.
Dang, if a Dyer-first and Ackley-second plays out that would be two years in a row that Ackley lost to a Loveland runner in the 1600m in June in Columbus.
