There is a nice profile of Farah in the British GQ. In it, Farah reveals that he learned in college he needed to get serious and stop partying so much as he realized the kenyans just ran and slept.
But what shocked me is he said the big party nights were Saturday, Wednesday adn sometimes Monday. Is that normal for the UK?
When I was in college in the US, the big nights were Thursday and Saturday. Not Friday as there are a lot of athletes at Princeton.
Here is where Farah talks about the uni party scene:
The biggest lesson for me was at University, when I moved to live with Kenyan runners in Teddington. Being a Uni lad, I’d go out on a Saturday, Wednesday and sometimes on a Monday. I really enjoyed myself and being with my friends, but there comes a point where you have to make a commitment: do you want to become an athlete or do you want to become an average runner?
At that point I decided that I wanted to become Olympic champion, I wanted to become world champion. What did I need to do? I remember talking to my agent at the time and he said, “Well we do look after a lot of the Kenyans here, why don't you just see how you get on with them, stay with them, train with them.” They were sleeping and eating – that was all they were doing, whereas I was coming back at midnight and playing PlayStation. I started to think, How am I going to beat these guys if I'm not even doing half of the work they're doing? That's the point I decided to work out what I needed to do.
