Great Oak had 5 guys over 180 speed rating. Cantu 178! Best performance by him ever!
Newbury park*
great oak had 6 over 180 in 2019 at cif though
Any more thoughts on Crystal Springs Uplands School? They won d5, finished high in the merge and I didn’t realize they only have 1 senior, and 3 sophomores scoring
My experience tells me perfect timing doesn't happen by accident. Draughon stepped into the unenviable position of taking over a national powerhouse team with incredibly high expectations. Unfortunately, many people enjoy seeing others fail, but kudos to Draughon and the boys team for performing so well when it mattered...I honestly didn't expect that today from them.
Makes me wonder if GO had been planning a surprise for today by either training hard through past races or purposefully stepping off the pedal a bit...a few of their top runners curiously fell back a lot of places during the last mile of the CIF finals last week - was that to get San Clemente's guard down?
Remember that last year Great oak was under Draughon too. Got 7th at nationals
Girls team was way below expectations
How many over 197 for GO in 2019?
How many “what ifs” > “sad” could be listed here ha. Los Altos #1 ran 12 points back due to some kind of injury on course. Los Altos #5 was also 20s back. On and on. Los Altos beat ‘em fair and square and made it to NXN over campo and j Serra. Happy.

0. This was more of a pack running team.
Last year Hector Martinez ran a 15:15. He was their sixth. This year Doshi ran a 15:17.
Looking at the State results, it does not look so dismal for NP in 2023.
Looking at top teams:
Great Oak #2 only has 2 non seniors. 15:34 (behind Doshi) and 16:00 (not far in front of Shetty)
San Clemente #3 has 4 non seniors in top 7, but only 1 ran sub 16. He ran 15:38 (21s behind Doshi). The 3 others were not too far in front of Shetty. As we know, NP has 3 or 4 guys which are almost as strong as Shetty right now
Granada #4 have the biggest problem. Their top 6 are all seniors. Their #7 only ran 16:08 ( far behind Doshi)
Oakdale #5 has 4 non senior in top 7. Their top non senior was only a couple of seconds behind Doshi 15:19). However, they fall quite steeply. Their next 3 non seniors ran 15:55, 16:28 and 19:00!!!
Ventura #6 have 5 non seniors in top 6(??). Their fastest one ran faster than Doshi. However, their 5th non senior ran 17:14, so there is not a lot of depth here. One injury and they have nothing.
Crescenta Valley #7 have 3 non seniors. None ran faster than 16:00. They went 16:02, 16:20 and 16:41. NP non seniors are faster than that…
So yes, NP non seniors will have to work hard in the next year, but they are in the game.
Teams to watch next year will be:
Ventura (clear favorite)
Trabuco Hills. All are back except for #5 and 7. 11th in merge. If they close the 4-5 gap they will be even more dangerous
Dana Hills. 18th in the merge. All are back except for #5 and 7. Great storied program. Went to NXN so many times. Peaks at the right time. Youngest team I’ve ever seen from them.
Crystal Springs Uplands School. Loses only their #2. Seventh in merge. Needs a fifth though
Cathedral. 13th in merge. Returns all but #4 and #6.
Great Oak. Returns 2 guys + another Rodriguez who ran at sections. 2 Brown brothers who are sophs and top JV. Very deep program overall
San Clemente. Returns most of their team but they lose their 1,2,4 so that’s always tough. Lead by Ephraim. Also needs a fifth for next year
I think all these teams will be better then Newbury Park
CCS sophomores are something else, Carson Hedlund got 10th D3, Aydon Stefanopoulos got 5th D2, Landon Pretre got 5th D5, Eli Fitchen-Young 6th D4, and Crystal had a bunch of high scorers as well, can’t wait to see what they do in the future.

Buchanan girls may have looked good on paper today, but never have I seen a faster team look worse down the homestretch. Almost every one of their girls staggered into the finish. It was very odd, like they all went to the well very, very deep.
its been a long year for the Bears. They havent had a healthy line up since their second meet so have had to spread themselves thin a lot to contend. their freshman Buckley went out too hot in her first state meet and ran out of gas at the end. Sundgren has faded some over the season and Lomeli hurt herself during the race. stumbled in minutes slower than her usual times. otherwise she would have been in their top three. the hero was freshman Tayler Torosian who pulled off a massive PR to snag 9th.
we will see what they have for next week. I imagine theyll be able to coble together a quality lineup one last time but then they will need it against Saratoga. these ladies could really use a rest after that...

D2 looking like the strongest division time wise for the girls. Could see both NP and Los Altos getting to NXN if there are 2 at large berths
D2 girls the strongest division boys or girls by a wide margin today. The merge shows that.
It remains to be seen whether Sadie is approaching her peak asymptote of performance, or just took a temporary slow-down due to illnesses this fall.
8 California teams will be at NXN
Newbury Park boys - number of seniors in the top 7
2017- 2 seniors
2018- 2 seniors
2019- 2 seniors
2020- 2 seniors
2021- 2 seniors
2022- 5 seniors. Would have been 6 if Martinez was still on the team
He is also a really cool dude
Based on state meet results….
I think next year’s top 4 teams (merge) will look like this.
Boys
1- Ventura (not even close!). Placed 6th and returns everyone
2- Trabuco Hills. Returns all but 5th and 7th man.
3- San Clemente. Returns only 4 but there are many people on JV that could be their fifth next year
4- Dana Hills. Putting them here because they have been to NXN so many times before, great program and only lose their 5 and 7. Usually they lose a lot more than that. Seeing Noonan make it will give the team motivation to try to do the same.
Crystal Springs will need a fifth man to challenge one of these teams.
Great Oak has some depth to reload.
Cathedral looks solid and young
