One team that people will be surprised about next year is Oakdale. They took 5th in the merge at CIF. They lose 3 seniors but return the following from that race: Alsaidi - 15:19 - 11 J Oliviera - 15:55 - 11 Cavanaugh - 16:28 - 10 Also junior M Oliviera - 16:49 last year and 9:50 in track but got hit by a bus in the summer according to some interviews. Next year he is looking to come back strong. Will probably be up there with their top 3. Now, if they find a fifth, they could possibly make a trip to NXN next year. Great to see the 6-senior team Granada make it though

So I wouldn’t be surprised if they will try to find a fifth man next year somehow because they will try to win it again, and then try to make NXN after seeing how close they were this year
Division 4 being that close was surprising. JSerra was top 3 in most state rankings and like top 15 nationally, but they almost lost to unranked Oaks Christian.
His last several races he was dealing with a rolled ankle injury and at CIF prelims and finals he had the flu.. but Jason is more of a track monster. He did great at Woodbridge because its a suitable course for him. Its flat and he prefers it like that. Hills are not his friend. Maybe he'll do better at hills his senior year as he matures.

Newbury Park became the first program in California prep history to not only win four consecutive boys team titles but also produce four individual winners in a row by sweeping both crowns in the Division 2 final at the CIF S...

I think it will be: Jason Parra Emmanuel Perez Evan Noonan Broen Holman Carter Spradling Watchlist Dev Doshi (not sure how he will transition to training on his own) Aydon Stefanopoulos
Fasthorse will be part of the qualifying team
It’s also worth noting that Noonan will have a chance to go with his team next year, which will allow another individual to slide in. Some of the guys may choose to do Eastbay. If they want to go to Eastbay nationals, they will need to decline the NXN invite like Engelhardt did.
What do you guys think were the biggest surprises?
I think that the way Crystal Springs Uplands School finished in the merge was impressive. 3 sophomores scoring too. Hopefully they find 2 more studs for 2024. This team and Yosemite will battle out in d5 for the next few years
I follow the speed ratings all year, and compile a list of best teams, and individuals with high scores. Freshman over 150, sophomores over 160, juniors over 174, and seniors over 180. With that, some things did not surprise me, as they lined up with speed ratings. Crystal Springs, Oakdale did pretty close to what the speed ratings predicted, and Great Oak finally had a healthy squad.
So what surprises me is something that the speed readings did not see. Like seeing a name I have *never seen before* run a speed rating of 179. That shouldn't happen at the state meet, and it was by a junior. Henry Baun 11 Yreka (NS) 15:36.3 178.92 His northern section was not speed rated. No other big races from him. Literally never seen the name before. Last track season he had more results in the pole vault than running events, with a 1600m PR of 4:58.
A name that I had never seen before sectionals, and its his first year running XC (according to his MileSplit interview). Olaf Dietz 11 Berkeley (NC) 15:28.1 181.65 No previous track results I can find either.
Also, a runner I do remember from last year by running a 4:21 1600m as a sophomore, but he had limited XC results, and his Oakland section was not speed rated, so was not on my radar at all. Miles Jones 11 15:44.1 Oakland Tech 176
These are great times at Woodward, especially for juniors who seem to have limited experience. Congrats, you made WaitForMoreData's list, for whatever that's worth, but consider it an early holiday gift :)
Think you should consider Palisades Charter from LA city section for an NXN bid on the boys side. If you look at their results and improvements this season it's really good and such a young squad with all underclassmen. They had the top freshman 3 mile team in the nation this year.
Millikan is another school to watch out for next year. They didn’t make state but they return Parra and all other scorers.
Also, Buchanan boys team somehow returns the second fastest group of 5K times in the state. A 16:07 average. They lose 3 seniors and didn’t make state. But they will be young next year so they are on the rise. Even this year they are kind of young. 2 freshmen and a soph on varsity
Clovis East and West return almost everyone
Clovis will be interesting too. They will return McNeal, Delgadillo and Morales who were sometimes their 2-4. They will just need to find a solid 4 and 5.

Yeah Palisades charter has 4 freshmen under 16:14 for 3-miles. 5th freshman is 17:27
Better than NP’s freshman class. But there are some sub-5 8th graders that could end up at NP next year.
But Palisades could be getting some good freshmen in the future too
I see your reasoning but Ramses is the one with all significantly faster PRs. We all have our rough stretches and none of us know the context behind it such as injuries or sickness. Very baseless statement.
