The shoes they were in rio had the foam but no carbon fiber plate. So they were nowhere near the vaporfly 4% but probably much more responsive than other flats. It is also worth noting many folks had the shoes in rio- the ones running for Nike. In both men’s and women’s marathons.
The Aug. 21 men's marathon on the final day of the Rio Olympics recorded peak viewership rates of 20.1% between 9:15 and 10:00 p.m., 23.7% from 10:05 to 11:00 p.m., and 18.4% between 11:05 p.m. and midnight. Early in the morn...
look at this photo . top 3 had them plus many many others
The top 3 had them. Shalane and Amy did too, I believe I remember. Many others did not. At the time it was said no one else did. They were colored to look like the shoe all those others had. LRC figured this out and solved the mini mystery. There was an article about this. Close up photos of the runners standing still allowed the difference to be visible. Extremely similar color-wise. Different shape a dead giveaway if you were looking for it. Hard to believe you don't remember this. They DID have the plate. It was the shoe that ended up being sold as the 4%. Rojo could confirm this and would know where the article(s) in question are.
All that having been said, the question posed earlier still stands. Was the shoe not significantly different from anything else? In that case, those medals were right where they should be. You seem to be in that camp, which is to say, the 4% didn't give you anywhere near a minute off.
Of course, a minute would be enough to change the medals, meaning Rupp DID NOT deserve Bronze and got it through cheating if the shoe claims are accurate. That's the other side of the shoe question. Don't know where I stand, but lean toward your view that they don't change much. However, most Board posters go the other way and say they're great and worth 2 minutes. That is the crowd that would have to admit Rupp's medal is dirty.
No, it was in an interview around Berlin time with one of those brojo minions. He said something about Rupp, like "yeah" when asked if Rupp could break his record.
Don't blame me for being too lazy to hunt this down and prove it, you would too.
Kipchoge was interviewed by Lewis Johnson after the race on NBC. It was hard to hear exactly what he said but we've rewound it 3 times and think this is it. When asked about Rupp, Kipchoge said in part, "Rupp is absolutely a...
What happened in the 2016 Olympic marathons where several athletes including Eliud Kipchoge and American stars Galen Rupp and Shalane Flanagan were given secret shoes, made to look like other shoes on the market, that scienti...
The reasons for this are fairly straightforward. 1)Conner is becoming a marathoner in the prime of his running career. Galen was already on the downside of his peak years when he moved to the marathon. 2)Conner appears to be slightly tougher mentally than Galen although they are both tough. 3)Conner is as good (or slightly better) on the track as Galen was when Galen moved to the marathon. Galen of course was better on the track but that was in his prime years. 5)Conner’s legs are not so beaten up and due to his age he may have a longer career as a marathoner than Galen did. However Galen did get a marathon medal (possibly due to a shoe advantage) and I am not sure that Conner will ever get a medal. 6)Conner’s running form appears to be more efficient and made for the marathon, more so than Galen’s. I assume many of you would agree with me here.
You give reasons to support your thesis, that Mantz will be BETTER (all caps in your title), but wouldn't it be helpful to define what it means to be better? What metric would you be using to evaluate this; is it their personal best time in their career, is it medals won in the Olympics and World Championships and top placings in the marathon majors? Is it total number of races under 2:09 (or some other demonstration of consistency)?
Give me a metric that will prevent a moving of the goal posts later.

Very good post. Talking specific metrics is a better way to handle this thread.
however, it’s clear the OP does not want to play ball, because if we chose a metric such as marathon medals won, his horse would lose. He is just jealous of Galen Rupp. Aint nothin new. People have been hating on Galen for 15+ years now. How many toxic threads have been posted how “Rupp is done! He will never break xx:xx again!” ?

What are you talking about?
Rupp, Shalane and Amy had the shoes at the US Marathon Trials in 2016 - nobody else did. The Olympics would have changed easily because the US team would have been different, had the shoes either not existed or been worn by all.
the shoes galen wore at the trials were not the shoes he (along with at least three dozen other nike athletes) wore in Rio. those shoes were also different. neither of them had a carbon fiber plate. same goes for whatever the ice queen wore.

The Trials shoe and the Rio shoes may be different. So what. The Rio shoe that dozens of Nike-shod participants wore was the same colorway as the plated shoe that the Men's medalists wore. That must be why you figure every Nike runner had the soon-to-be-named 4%. They were colored like the regular Nike exactly to avoid getting busted for breaking the rule.
This whole thread is stupid. By far the most defining factor impacting the marathon in Rio was the high humidity. Either you can take and relax in the soup or you physically/mentally can’t handle the heat.
The race was a death march and survival run for the final 10k. Kipchoge would have dispatched the field if he was running in training shoes. No contest.

They downvoted you but you may be correct. Most of them have no clue.
