Kipchoge was interviewed by Lewis Johnson after the race on NBC. It was hard to hear exactly what he said but we've rewound it 3 times and think this is it.

When asked about Rupp, Kipchoge said in part, "Rupp is absolutely a very good athlete. I expect a lot from him. I expect Rupp to even run a world record in the marathon."

Lewis Johnson wanted to make sure he heard that right so he asked Kipchoge, "What did you say?"

Kipchgoe responded, "Rupp is good. I expect him to run the fastest time ever in the marathon, yeah."

The Kenyans will be laughing about this back in the village this afternoon when they log in.

Rupp finished 1:20 behind a 2:02 marathoner in his first big marathon (OTs didn't really push him). He was seconds behind a 2:04 guy.

Does rojo think that a tactical marathon run in the upper 70s in high humidity on a slow (too many turns for being fast) reflects in any way what he could run in Berlin-type conditions?

Kipchoge is being perhaps overly optimistic, but 2:04 for Rupp is almost a certainty right now, and given proper development, 2:03 or better is in the offing.

The US won 1 gold. Africa won 11. And we weren't really remotely close to winning #2.

Let's look at the events where the US won medals.

W 1500- Simpson ran a really smart race.

W steeple - Coburn is deifinitely one of the three fittest steeplers on the planet right now but no where close to gold.

M800 - mruphy ran a brilliant race. No where close to gold.

M 1500 -He could medal doing any tactics, and maybe win gold, but his tactics ensured gold.

MSteeple - Great run by Jager. See W Steeple.

M5000 - our medallist was born in Africa.

MMarathon - Rupp ran great. Not close to gold.

All true. Distance events are still largely dominated by African runners. But the notable statement here is the "mental barrier" that's been broken for Americans racing against the Africans. That's something that wasn't always the case and the results showed it. Among American athletes, coaches, and fans, there is genuine belief now that the USA can compete with the best in the world. That battle is perhaps the most critical in our nation's pursuit of glory in these events. Rio 2016 was a huge step for elite American distance running in this regard.

If anythingI think the African advantage might be the biggest in the marathon. Now the fact that Rupp looks like he's jogging when he runs a 61 half in portland does make me think he can run fast.I never said he couldn't run fast.

But WR? Really?

I think the odds are certainly less than 1%. But I dont' have the resources to make that bet. If I was Warren Buffeet, I'd do it for sure as I think the odds are certainly less than 1%.
