1. 1985 Chicago Bears The greatest defense of all time belongs to the 1985 Chicago Bears. Chicago’s front seven was ruthless, with players like Mike Singletary, Richard Dent, Steve McMichael, and Dan Hampton. Dent led the way with 17.0 sacks. Otis Wilson and McMichael combined for 18.5 sacks. The Bears allowed 24+ points in two of their first three games. It didn’t take long to settle in, as they held 12 of their last 13 opponents under 20 points. Chicago’s only loss of the season came in one of the greatest Monday night football games of all time. Here are the rest of their defensive numbers.
2. 2000 Baltimore Ravens The 2000 Ravens may be the worst team offensively to ever win a Super Bowl. Why did they win? Because they allowed an average of 9.4 points in 16 regular season games and four playoff games. 1. 1985 Chicago Bears The success of this team is almost mythical. The ’85 Bears led the league in yards, points, first downs and turnovers en route to a 15-1 regular season. In the playoffs they shut out both the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams and did not allow a touchdown for 11 quarters. They finished things off with a 46-10 dismantling (123 total yards allowed, 7 sacks, 6 takeaways) of the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX.
I do get a kick out of rookies who try to challenge me when it comes to pro football history. I do have my fun.
Forget about history. Your current judgment of Russell Wilson disqualifies you from having any credibility to the point that I trust the rookies and their judgment more than yours. You are really struggling here.
Smart move getting off trying to hang with me over history.
Dude, let the season play out let's see how it goes, ok rookie?
I am not living in the past, or at least I try not to. Why would I talk about NFL players from 70 years ago?
Not about living in the past slugger it's about knowing the hstories, the origins of things. Ya know Jack Johnson, Jesse Owens, The Galloping Ghost, Cool Papa Bell, Slingin' Sammy Baugh this is called.....depth
Think you finally realized history buff here and no you can't hang.
Big into todays NCAA and NFL also, have it all covered rookie.
Here ya go rookie the reason Galimore never had a 1000 yard season was because of fullback Rick Casares who did he was their main rusher, Galimore sharing carries think Tank Younger and Deacon Dan Towler.
12 yards on 7 carries! I saw that game. Chicago D, 5 interceptions of Y.A.'s passes. Larry Morris returned 1 for 61 yds. ( no TD ). He also sacked Tittle in the 1st half and temporarily knocked him out of the game.
The Bears allowed 24+ points in two of their first three games. It didn’t take long to settle in, as they held 12 of their last 13 opponents under 20 points.
Held under 20 points? That's your standard?
The '76 Steelers had a defensive run that no other team has approached. After injuries and a 1-4 start they gave up 1 touchdown, 7 field goals, and 28 total points over their next 9 games. 28 total points in 9 games is 3 points per game.
This was NOT one of their superbowl championship seasons. They were a run heavy offense with two 1000 yard backs in a 14 game season. Both RBs (Harris/Blier) were injured and did not play in their AFC Championship loss to an excellent Raiders team.
I am not claiming this is the best defense in NFL history, but it is certainly in the conversation. 1 touchdown allowed in 9 games!!
I am claiming that anyone who says it is abundantly clear that the '85 Bears, '00 Ravens, any of several Steelers teams, etc. was the best defense without question is not being honest with themselves as a fan.

Steelers definitely had some great defenses during that era, but there is a real dividing at 1978, when rules changes made things much more friendly for the offense.
