Jakob ran his race right. It was just Wightman's day.
Quote from Jakob in Norwegian media:
I think its embarrassing to be this good and at the same time this f!cking bad.
Didn't think that anyone would be crazy enough to attack on the outside with the pace they had been holding, obviously it was.
To avoid confusion, he is talking about himself. He is extremely aelf critical in general, and but I hope he will get some sleep and can tune his head around towards the 5000.
He didn't learn much in hindsight from his PR race at Monaco.
Wightman attacked on the outside, with 200m to go, after Cheruiyot pulled Ingebrigtsen through in a 2:47 race but couldn't hold it.
They dialled it back a bit today (2:48 split, which saw the winning time also a second slower). Wightman did his thing. It paid off.
Man, Jakob ha. He didn’t run a bad or dumb race even if I question his timing to take the lead. He tried to do it the hard way. Few guys have ever been able to do it. I do love how fiery he is. He is going to look to stomp these guys at the DL Final and/or European Champs
I think Jakob's biggest mistake was allowing Wightman to pass him on the backstretch. I wonder what would have happened had he instead pushed and held Wightman into lane two on the bend.
By allowing him around, Jakob had to slot in for the entire bend, actually came out wide towards the end of the bend (running a little extra distance), and then had to try to go around Wightman where he ran out of steam.
You either win the race or you lose the race. If you failed to win then that makes you a what? Indeed you are a L
just a great race and won by the best guy on the day . Rematch at the Europeans is going to be sick . To think jacob is only 21 is mind boggling . how old is garcia ?
Agreed. Jakob put himself at the chief spot when the bell rang. Jakob was not able to hold Wightman off when he caught him, and overtook him, on the final turn.
Wightman's move at 300 was the real power move. I think he surprised himself with how strong he felt. He looked like Cram doing that.
What a race to run a PB! The strength work in preparation starting last year paid off. Is there more to come?

Just turned 23, Katir is 24. Everybody in the top 6 is 27 or younger and then you’ve got Hocker, Hoare and some others not even there. This event is going to be excellent through 2025 with 3 more golds on the line.

“Allowing” him? I don’t think Jakob ‘allowed’ or wanted Wightman to pass him. And Wightman actually completed the pass and cut-in on the turn, indicating he was stronger at that point.
Wightman powered to overtake Jakob on the turn. He knew there were others potentially coming up on his right shoulder if he were to wait and try and pass in the final straight.
Once Wightman cut in, he make have broken Jakob’s momentum ever so slightly, but enough for the knockout blow.
In retrospect if Jakob could/would have done differently, it would be to lay it all out on that last turn, at all costs, to not let Wightman get around. But maybe he did try to prevent that as best he could, and Wightman, in the moment, had the greater momentum and strength to get around Jakob.
I think JI would have lost anyway tonight. I think he needs to improve his 800m. He was not gracious in defeat. 1-2-3 were all Europeans so he can't duck next month saying that the competition is weak. This was good for the sport.
Just rewatched: Jakob made a couple mistakes I think he correctly pointed out. He fought somewhat hard to get the lead at 800 when maybe should’ve waited until 600. Then he worked really hard to fend off multiple attacks from Tim/Kipsang. While this was a good tactic to beat them evidently, it left him vulnerable to a late attack from Wightman who stayed out of the mix-ups. But you can’t really blame Jakob because nobody expected that out of Wightman being able to throw 2 surges at Jakob on the backstretch on a 3:29 race.
Here’s the NBC replay. Jake ran great tactics, picking good times to move up to stay with the leaders, and staying locked on the rail otherwise. Jakob wasted a good amount of energy running three curves in lane two (that alone would have won him the race) and leading with no one to break the wind for another 1.5 laps. You have to be at least a second faster than someone who ran like Jake to still win with that extra distance and effort.

He also said to Norwegian media that he and Tim made fools out of themselves by battling out for the lead.

What are you on about? Ducking out saying the competition is weak? He would never do that, and there is no indication he would do that. What a weird thing to say.
