Percentages of freshmen that keep running after freshman year. This one is for XC only.
Class of 2020: Boys - 80%. One of these who quit CC did nothing but track in 2018 after freshman CC. Girls - 71.4%
Class of 2021: Boys - 64%. Girls - 50%. There were only 2 girls. One went to run for all 4 years, and the other quit after the XC season.
Class of 2022: Boys - 67% (one of the 3 that quit XC after the first year did Pole vault in track through Sr year) Girls - 50% continued XC after 9th grade. There were 4 freshman girls. Only 2 girls ran XC for all 4 years. The other 2 only did track after 9th grade.
Class of 2023: Boys: 37.5% Girls: 67%. The rest of them only did track.
Track (looking at the people who ran the 1600 freshman year and continued afterwards): Class of 2020: Boys: 100% Girls: 67%. The other one only did 400s or lower and long jumps.
Class of 2021: Boys: 75% Girls: no one ran 1600 as a freshman. Hawkins ran the 800 and continued.
Class of 2022: Boys: 57%. One that didn’t continue the 1600s after freshman year did only jumps and 100m dashes. Girls: 75%
Really curious why my post was deleted stating the experience for those who aren’t at the top isn’t good at NP and that Brosnan doesn’t pay attention to them. Is there some issue posting anything negative about NP or Brosnan? Is it the mods that delete it or does Brosnan request it to be deleted?
Only one boy didn’t break 4:50. A 5:01 freshman. Shows how dedicated everyone is to the program. Insane
Only two freshman on the distance team at a school with over 2000 kids seems suspect.
Millard West boys (finished 2nd at state 3 years in a row and took second at Heartland) only had 2 freshman in CC too. One ran over 23 minutes and the other ran over 37 minutes in the 5K. This team had 3 seniors, 2 sophs and 2 seniors in their top 7.

This is clearly the best team that has ever run in HS, but that stat is really not that impressive. Mead High School probably had 100-150 boys turn out every year back when I was running in the mid to late 90s. I ran with them in the summers (another school) and I think they probably had 50 that were sub 5, probably 20 that were sub 4:30, 10 that were sub 4:20, 5 that could go sub 4:10 and 2-4 that were in the 4:00 to 4:05 range. Deepest program in the history of high school running. I won't believe otherwise.
Perhaps there is a Mead grad out here (or Pat Tyson himself?!) that could comment/confirm with some actual stats?
Really? I think their best team was 1993/1994 with Davis, Davis, DeTray, James, and Aubrey. That would give them five sub-4:15. There weren't many other dudes on their heels, so they probably didn't have ten sub-4:20. Maybe ten under 4:30 or 4:35?

Can you give us some names of those who ran 4:00-4:05? I remember a bunch of 8:50s/9:0x kids but not many under 4:10. I think one year a kid from another school ran 4:17 in Districts and didn't Q for state, and that was considered a big deal (so about 6-7 kids 4:10-4:17)

Come on. You won’t believe there was a deeper program in the history of HS running but you don’t know their real stats and just make stuff up? They did not have that kind of depth in the mid to late 90s.

I was around during these years and the best year I can remember was Matt and Micah Davis, Rob Aubrey, Sky Detray (I know I spelled this wrong), and I think Greg James was on that team. I might be overlapping years because I remember all these guys winning state titles so though I think they were all on the team at the same time, I don't think they all ran their HS PRs in the same year. Most of these guys were around 4:10 though I think Matt was injured so didn't run Sr year (he might have been 4:05 capable). I might be forgetting a guy. It's possible they had another few guys around 4:20, but I kind of doubt 20 under 4:30. If you counted a 5-6 year period, for sure, but not all in one year.
Yes, those teams of '92/'93 were the best with Matt, Micah, Skiy, Rob, etc. but I am also thinking of some of the guys through '96 with Jason Fayant, Morgan Thompson and others. Like I said, "I think". Maybe they were not as deep as I remember but I think someone would be challenged to come up with a deeper program. The sheer numbers helped produce greatness. Combined with Pat's infectious personality, the program was turning out titles every year (9 straight I believe).
You might be correct. I may be blurring years as well. Loved those teams and loved running with the vintage just after the Davis brothers. It was a true inspiration being around that program and having friends on the team. Seriously elevated my running and inspired me.
You might be right. I may be blurring my years together. That program was deep though. And no, I don't believe there was a single program as deep as that program in the history of HS running. Maybe 1-7 in a single year but not over a decade like they were. I also saw the quality of 8-20 and how good they were in any given year. Would have beat most other states champions.
In the end, we don't have to agree and it is kind of pointless to argue it. And I don't want to believe it! :-) It is the advantage of getting older: i don't care what others think and am right in my own mind. As the youth say: "I am living my own truth"
