It's also a good excuse for when you come up short. Anyway, he's running times 2.4 seconds slower than Max Burgin ran at the same age so it's not like he's doing anything extraordinary. Maybe some perspective here
Nevertheless, just about all of the top runners with supposed low mileage training have at some point been found to do much more or to only count workout volume or quality.
Quote: "he only runs 5 miles some week" - sounds like a taper week here, a recovery week there. And months full of hard work.
Ovett made the 800m Olympic final in Montreal at age 18. Coe was only a year younger but matured slightly later. Coe had better PBs in 400, 800, 1000, 1500, mile.
Is running fast times off low mileage the new pissing contest? You can only take it so far, though. In the old days, Gerry Lindgren ran about 500mpw. Nowadays, Natalie Cook only runs 20mpw. Flatt is running a near-NR (HS) off 5-mile weeks. Maybe somebody in the next few years will get the national HS record off 0-mile weeks, but then there is no more room for improvement in that area. Everybody will be claiming to not train at all. Unless, perhaps a few of the fast 0-mile trainers will claim to actually try to sabotage their fitness and still be fast, i.e. "I don't train at all, I smoke 4 packs a day, drink every night, and I'm sleep-deprived." Then it would gradually become a battle to be the most undertrained, diseased elite track athlete..."Cade Flatt Jr ran 1:43 despite never having gotten out of bed his entire life and suffering from end-stage brain cancer", etc.
The entire Flatt shtick is beyond old. The mileage claim is a load of crap and when he gets to college he’ll be good but not outstanding. He won’t even win an NCAA title, let alone an SEC title, unless it is as a member of a relay team.
He isn’t the next best thing and he is only a legend in his own mind.
This nonsense started with the Brazier crowd. It varied, but as an example, he claimed he ran as low as 15-20 miles, then they would go on to fantasize as to how much faster he can go if he only added 10-15 miles per week and such. They claimed he would get the world record in no time and likely be the first to run under 1:40. This type of crowd cant stand that a white kid dares to claim an even lower mileage. Hurts them. But the biggest fools to me are the Brazier fans. 5 years later, who's supposed to be the greatest thing the world has ever seen is a dud.
Citius interview (@29:50) of Flatt with Brenda Martinez the day after the race. He is there to support his pacer Judson Lincoln who wins the 400. Judson is interviewed at 1:37:30.
Kyle Merber and Chris Chavez host After The Final Lap live from Franklin Field in Philadelphia for the 2022 New Balance Nationals Outdoor. We will be joined...
Seriously? I wouldn’t call breaking the American record and winning a World championship a dud. WTAF??? But I will say I’m so thankful that Flatt is headed to Ole Miss, home of the WesFly, rather than 800U.

Oh ohhhh. Brazier fanboys have really backpedaled. Lowered expectations by quite a bit. Poor things. Reality bites huh?
Supposed to already have run 3 seconds faster than what he has, have the WR, and have two olympic golds. Truly staggering crash in expectations. Is this a bigger crash than bitcoin?
