it has to do with all all of the above i guess but the one take away is the attendance was an embarrassment not matter how you spin it. my take : coverage is terrible, it is like watching highlights intermixed with commercials intermixed with up close and personals. it bodes badly for the world championships. who designed this event and did they actually think it would look well? if so , they need to find another career.
What other major sport wastes 50 percent of its time and prize money on women? Women, that are turning in "top" performances that many high school boys would be ashamed of?
The old school days of the hayday in track and field was all about men and them racing. This was back when the average Joe Sixpack was interested, not just washed up high school/college runners that post on heavily censored running message boards. People that watch pro sports want to see the best of the best, not Title IX subsidized carryover with women drawing salaries and entry fees by leeching off the backs of male athletes.
Imagine if we took the NFL model and ditched the pro running women's events entirely. Institute a men's only track meet, with twice as many male contenders (e.g. instead of 3 top names per race, have 6). Double the available male prize money and increase the quality of the fields and the competitiveness of the races.
Maybe put a few pretty cheerleaders on the track so there is some female involvement and put on a highly competitive meet. That will draw in way more crowds than the current women's races which have a bunch of women that don't shave their armpits and have pink hair (Canada I'm looking at you), men running as women (Zambia and SA I'm looking at you), women that look like men and act like men after taking massive amounts of steroids and PEDs, and largely non-competitive slow female races (compare the 1-8 gap in a men's 5000 to a women's 5000 for instance).
Instead US T&F is doubling down by pushing more parapalegic events and other boring, non-relatable, non-entertaining races on us. Am I the only one that just rolled my eyes and fast forwarded when the para events came on yesterday?
US T&F has become the ultimate social equity sport and it's been an abject failure. Really, people will just turn off the tube rather than watch this boring crap being foisted upon us.
You have to ask yourself why this hasn't even been tried one single time in the last 40 years that I know of, when it's so obvious. Prove me wrong, US T&F. Market it correctly and try it at a few meets and let's see.

It has more to do than just marketing. This is not simple a case of if they build it they will come.
1. Eugene is a crap podunk little town
2. It does not have the requisite infrastructure for visitors
3. It is difficult and expensive to get to
4. It does not have the catchment area that a metropolitan location has and will always have low numbers visiting.
Clearly you’ve never been to Eugene, or an actual “crap podunk little town.” And WTF is a “catchment area?”
Well clearly you are part of the problem if you do not know what podunk and catchment area as it relates to population dynamics mean. You must be part of the governing body of USATF.
I don't often do this but here: Think of NYC and its bedroom communities that have a population catchment area of 25 million people. Think of its location as a gateway to the global; think of its tourist infrastructure; think of its accommodation infrastructure; think of the ease to get to the area; think of being able to combine events with other tourist activities that fans of the sport and others accompanying them would visit and take part in and the list goes on and on...
No I have never visited Eugene and have no desire to do so. I have attended Worlds every year since 2007 and this year sadly, will be the first I will miss.

The real problem that nobody is addressing is that in multiple opportunities for professional runners to get a payday in Diamond League, be it Doha, Lausanne, Birmingham, Brussels, etc...the running community has become overly satiated with running events and as result, watching 9.91, 9.93; 19.89, 19.77, etc isn't special except for a paycheck.
World Championship and Olympic running is still special and still gets the crowds.
This Is partially because coverage is prime time and limited to the week of scheduling.
Diamond League gets weekend afternoon coverage when most people have better things to do than watch running events.
It's legitimately the same track meet in different locations and it's basically jockeying for the WL. But the WL is related to that year and doesn't guarantee it's close to a WR, or a NR.
And lately, with most results becoming WL times rather than records, it's really not that interesting.
Joe sixpack likes the best, but he's not so interested in the process or hunt to get there.
Me thinks they need a new volunteer crew of local high school coaches and chubby runners to market Hayward Field. The current citizens committee has botched the job.

Um. US World Cup Men's teams draw in more than 10x what women's teams do. Wake up. What do you think pro soccer teams draw? How many pro soccer teams are women? If this is the best example you can come up with, then your argument is very pathetic. Big deal the US women's teams wins more because most countries do not socialize their sports like the US does and a good number of countries don't even put out a women's team. How does this support your idea? Yes I'm all for the US soccer teams being paid what they can support based on attendance and viewership and sponsorship. Hate to break it to you but if there were no men's team socializing the women's team, the US soccer women's team would fold very quickly or at least have to take taxpayers money to pay their salaries.

Bichon frise please. It's basic marketing. I sincerely doubt that would result in better viewing figures or more ticket sales. The average fan doesn't care about the times or know what's good for a man in the 5000m, whether 12 min or 14 min or 15 min is good. For track and field, the hardcore fans aren't numerous enough in terms of the fanbase. They are a small percentage of the total crowd. People are attracted by big names (e.g. Mo Farah running a meet), headlines, what it's like as a day out, surprisingly how family-friendly it is with other activities to be done there, accessibility, even things like the food choices and availability there. If it was male only maybe it would attract a small number of hardcore fans but that's about it. It would be a sausage festival.

They haven't won a WC Semi in close to 100 years.
No your asinine argument was that Men's Soccer team should be disbanded because they aren't making enough money to justify them, while the winning women's team should carry on due to their success. That's like arguing that a losing NBA team should be disbanded because they aren't winning yet a "winning"WNBA team is winning so it should be given more money. If the men's soccer team goes 0-20 and sells its TV rights for $200 million and they're paying for themselves what's the problem? Women's team goes 20-0 and can't give away its TV rights yet you want to pay them more? I hope you aren't working in a job with any real world decision making than fast food service.

Completely agree. Track isn’t the NFL. There are not enough people with high level knowledge of the sport to market it as a high level athletic feat. Track should market itself for it’s prestige “Olympic champ” and it’s competitiveness. Everyone knows about the Olympics and it’s not hard to explain what the USA/world championships are so take advantage of that. And two people kicking down the home straight is always entertaining. Most people don’t care if it’s a man or a woman or if the time says 14:00 or 13:00. Emphasize the matchups between people.
OK- I don't expect that you've read my posts concerning this- it's a big message board. I've been running (and have been a fan) for 51 years: 1. There was a time when the general public showed up to track meets and watched on TV- google the Ryan/Liquori race from 1971 and watch.
2. At one time in the 1980's the NYC and Chicago marathons had higher TV ratings than any baseball game except the world series and any football game except the playoffs.
3. I remember the Wide World of Sports covering road miles, track meets, road races.
It's all in marketing and exposure.
And, outside of the opinions of some of the troll/losers on this message board, we actually have the type of athlete kids should be looking up to. The nature of the sport is to live a healthy ;lifestyle.
The production of meets is horrible- watching a meet on TV and 30 minutes in we've seen 2 heats of the 100 and 2 heats of the hurdles.
Granted most sports don't have much action- football and baseball have more down time than people actually moving- but at least they APPEAR to be getting something done.
Move the meets along, keep the action coming. And get some announcers who know what they're doing.
You are 100% correct. Honestly, there’s nothing inherently more exciting about one sport over another. Have you watched a F1 race? It’s a snooze fest, little passing, nearly predetermined outcomes, you can’t see the athletes! Yet it’s a global spectacle now. The Miami Grand Prix sold out how many tickets in 30 minutes? I think those in control of T&F should watch Winning Time, the show about Magic and the Lakers on HBO. See how to build a brand, generate excitement, give fans a show that goes beyond the competition itself. It’s doable for T&F.
Winning Time didn’t suddenly make the NBA, Magic Johnson, and the Lakers into brand names.
Honestly you all gotta stop with this. The Joe Sixpack Strawman is never going to care about track. Even if he could gamble on it. Just embrace the niche we have.
