he is 1.5 older than some. half older than others. probably 10-12 months older than his senior competition on average
I'm curious about your math. Doesn't Cade turn 19 in July? If he's 1.5 years older than others, are you telling me there are seniors who turn 17 in February of their senior year?
10-12 months older than his senior competition on average? Are you telling me that most seniors turn 18 in May-July?
And since it's an in-service day with nothing to do, I'll see how much older Cade would be than our varsity xc boys if they were seniors.
1. two months older
2. same age
3. five months older
4. one month younger
5. four months older
6. five months older
7. one month younger
I thought i read he turned 19 this week.
I would ballpark that the average senior turns 18 in March. In New York, where cut off for kindergarten is December 1, probably closer to May/June. Most of the country starts September and October.
According to World Athletics he is 19. He said he wasn't 19 but now he s because of a birthday. World Athletics must have a different birthday for him than what he claims it is. Something odd about this. Whatever day he was born, and year, it seems obvious that he repeated a year, or his parents started him in school a year late.
A December cutoff date seems awfully late. Are there any states later than that? Thirty states in the country have their cutoff date as September 1st or earlier.
Jul. 31 – Hawaii (effective 2014-15), Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota Aug. 1 – Arkansas, Indiana Aug. 15 – Tennessee (effective 2014-15) Aug. 31 – Arizona, Delaware, Kansas, New Mexico, North Carolina, Washington Sept. 1 – Alabama, Alaska, California (effective 2014-15), Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin (19 states)
His birthday listed on the race results showed May 23. So he just turned 19.
I was discounting this age nonsense until the fact of his 19th birthday this week was revealed.
...if Sam Whitmarsh (TxA&M, FR 1:46.06) did the same thing, we would be talking about him breaking Granville's record. (Unfortunately, Whitmarsh is our of t&f indefinitely due to heart condition)
His birthday listed on the race results showed May 23. So he just turned 19.
World Athletics had him at 19 BEFORE May 23rd. So, the date he says he was born is different than what World Athletics was had for some time now. Just an hour ago World Athletics did not have a year of birth for this guy, and now 2003 is listed.
This adult kid seems to have been posting quite a bit on LRC trumping himself up. Strange dude. Trust him at your own risk.
Even if he just turned 19 in May of his senior year, that's pretty common for a freshman in college. Donovan Brazier turned 19 in April of his freshman year of college, and a little over a month later he ran 1:43.55.... I don't see Cade Flatt running more than 3 seconds faster still in the next month or so. So the comparisons don't really make sense right now.
How many NCAA freshmen run sub 1:47? There are only a couple per year, so he is still very very very good. But he's not Donovan Brazier good.

December cannot be right. I am in CA and a September cutoff has been around since at least the 1970s... the date likely changed. It looks like most states are standardizing at September 1st.
1:46.5 is not in the ballpark to make worlds this year.
Also, I’m sure with warmups and all of that, he runs more than 10 mpw, but the 800m is primarily anaerobic. You can get pretty good at it just by doing long sprint work, weight room work, and plyometrics. Look at brazier. He jumped from 20 mpw to 35 and his 800m didn’t improve but his 1500m did a good deal.
I guarantee you one will be in a better place to race 800m doing 15 mpw of 400/800 training than 70 mpw of easy runs and tempos. I do think however, to max out your potential you need to be doing a bit of both.
2) It doesn't look like he even made the state meet this year in xc.
3) That being said, it's prettty wild he can run 4:12 for 1600 off of that low mileage.
Brazier had better endurance at that age but also probably ran a little more.
As for him being 19, his birthday was yesterday.
Maybe in HS? But beyond that, 800 has different training sched than 400, much different in my experience. Not too many pros running 800 on 20MPW.
There’s a big difference in how 400/800 and 800/150O guys train. Juantorena’s trading was very similar to Flatt’s with all of his running on the track and a lot of time in the gym.
If Flatt was currently running 50 mpw, how much faster than 1:46 do you think he would run? As he said in his interview, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

Yeah any Brazier comparison is ridiculous. He ran that 1:43.55 at 19 years and 56 days. No way Cade does that in two months. He's probably gonna break the HSR but I would never take it as seriously as Granville's solo run at Cal State Champs. At 19 I started my sophomore year of college. Cade is talented but he obviously has an advantage over the majority of athletes in high school. He's definitely not close to most talented 800 runner ever to come through the high school ranks when he's 19. That much is certain.
NEw York is december 1. I promise. It might be the only state with such a late date, and it is long past time to change. There might be one or two other states that go longer than october, besides NY. I don't remember. I looked into it quite a bit around 1.5 years ago.
I don't recall Granville did any measurable mileage. Just speed work on run down grass and dirt around a middle school field. I am one also siding of the opinion that CF needs to do this record in a high school only race. His personality is without a doubt a plus, but he had his chances. Him doing it pro races is not different than college freshman having additional or open competitions and if he is 19...then there you go. What's the difference? I'm glad they separate NFHS for that reason. I saw a post here recently that said we have never seen anybody with Flatt's range. Uh....yes we have. He couldn't touch Granville in any race under 800. CF is probably 0.5 seconds slower than MG in the 100 as I think he ran 10.6 in 9th grade and possibly a second slower in the 200 and 400. Heck...I get way more excited by Obea Moore's range than Flatt's.
As many have said, it's the 800. There have been dozens of true sprinters who don't even really hammer speed endurance sessions like a 4/8 guy that have gone under 1:50.
I'm far more surprised when I hear about things like Natalie Cook doing 15:25 in the 5k on less than 20mpw.
