He is 19 already, his ceiling is slightly lower than if he was 17.
I shouldn't be saying this but he exaggerated. He only runs 1-2 miles per week. He gets most of his training by eating apples while standing on 1 foot and delivering speeches to his pet hamster. That is the secret: controlled breathing while you eat, speak and rhubarb your belly.
I hear Canova is carefully analyzing this new revolutionary technique. It is about getting really good at something by doing something entirely different.

Think how much better he'd be if he ran 130 miles a week at 9 minute pace.
1) Mileage isn't that important for 400-800 guys.
2) It doesn't look like he even made the state meet this year in xc.
3) That being said, it's prettty wild he can run 4:12 for 1600 off of that low mileage.
Brazier had better endurance at that age but also probably ran a little more.
As for him being 19, his birthday was yesterday.

The guys from the 80s are infinitely better runners. Shoes alone make the comparison humorous
The "just add more miles" myth doesn't really affect 800 runners like letsrun thinks it does.
Not that wild if you can accept great HS milers run 48-51 on a all out 4c400 leg.
4:12 is a great 1600 for a kid who can hit a 54, Cade can split maybe 45+ His stamina is respectable but his speed is outstanding.
And too if Cade goes out and runs say 5x 500 1:10 in trainers and takes 300m walk rest after each rep he’s actually training for over 20’ not just the 6’ minutes he’s running.
We have to get past this outdated fixation on volume.
Do you really think he only runs 10 mi a week?

4:12 is not impressive at all for a 19 year old on any kind of mileage. That's what grown men are able to do.
The real issue is his age. He's a 19 year old running against 17 year olds. This is a huge advantage.
Now I don't have a problem with 19yo being in high school. After all, the mission of public education is to educate (at least attempt) as many young people as they can - including developmentally slow students (not saying he is). With that said, I'd say it's fair to allow 19yo to participate in high school athletics. The physical, social and emotional development advantages are obvious. But I'm not for counting the performances of of 19 year olds as high school records. The unfairness of it is obvious. He's a grown man among boys.
FWIW, when I was nineteen I ran 8:40 in the steeplechase, which is far better that the hs national record. That would have been completely unfair had I been racing against hs kids -- even though as a nineteen year old, I didn't look a day over fifteen.
