Am I seeing that they’re actually doing a beer mile? Is this the first time a beer mile has been part of an meet like this. I absolutely love it, it would get me out more.
If World Athletics lists an athletes' age as the oldest he is during the calendar year as you are saying then why is Cole Hocker listed as being 20 years old? If what you say is true, then WA would list him as being 21. If Flatt being 19 is wrong, my guess is WA doesn't have his birth date since none is listed on his page.
If they don't know the exact birthdate they choose the oldest age someone born in that year could be. If they know the birthdate, they give the actual age.
It was very slow. 53.97. Honestly, I didn’t even realize he was in the race through the first 400, because the bitrate on my phone was so awful, and I didn’t see him go through at 51-52
yeah pretty ideal pacing, but was in that second pack that got gapped so he was running in the wind (and in lane 2) more than necessary. add in the weather and the fact this is his first time really being tested (i think?) and suddenly sub-1:45 is in the cards.
As a reference for my "hate" on this kid, I'll make my viewpoint really simple.
He got 4th. He didn't break the record he said he was going for. Addressing that 4th-place, non-record result in the post-race interview, he said "I'm the best ever".
This sport needs an over confident trash talker. Every other sport is filled with them. Track athletes are too kind and nonchalant. This kid has personality and he's not afraid to show it.

Track is not the U.F.C. and does not need a trash talker. He’s only 18 (19?) and I’ll cut him a lot of slack but hopefully he’ll grow up a little before he ever represents the U.S. in the Olympics.
