What was the world record in the 200 meters before michael Johnson broke it in 96? I am curious as to how much be broke the record by.

19.72?
19.72 Pietro Mennea, ITA, 12 Sep 79, Mexico City
-- Johnson ran 19.66 at Oly trials and then 19.32 at the Olympics in 1996
Yep and this is one record that will stand for a long f'ing time. Oh and this reminds me that I would like to see that 20 page Hart report.
I have been trying to find an internet video of that full race. Believe it or not I have never, ever seen it in its entirety. Had to attend some function that night in 1996 and only later saw highlights of MJ crossing the finish and the famous photos. Can anyone provide a link?
Iff this link doesn't work, just go to
http://www.olympic.orgclick on 1996 Olympics >> Highlights and you'll find it.
eggcelent video..thank you! It just confirms what I always heard about that race. First 100m was OK, but that second 100m coming off the turn was like some superhuman slingshot.
I think MJ was on drugs. I heard that Burger King Whoppers are a masking agent.
Actually the first 100 was very fast. I remember from watching the race live how ridiculously fast he got out of the blocks. As I recall, he makes up the stagger by around 60m into it or something ridiculous like that.
That video is incredible! What's amazing is that it looks like he let up with about 20M to go instead of running through. Could've shaved a couple more 100ths off if he would have ran through.
Yep. It was pretty clear he was going to smoke the field from the gun, and that sure as hell lit a candle under Frank Fredericks' butt because he also came in under Mennea's 1972 mark, and became the 2nd fastest human ever at 200M.
I remember watching it live and thinking "my God he is faster than time", because you could see that he was going to annhialate the record (which was his at the time 19.66).
When Michael Johnson lowered the record in one season from 19.72 to 19.32, he cut roughly 2% off of the record (0.4/19.72x100). Does anyone know of a greater percentage being taken of of a record in one season?

Bob Beamon, roughly 7% better than the previous LJ record.
