I remember reading a few threads about smokejumping and that there are a few former smokejumpers and hotshots here. I'm a 19 year old college student and I want to work on a wildland firefighting crew or as a hotshot this summer. My understanding is that you must work on a crew for a few months BEFORE you become a "hotshot?" I do not have any experience with municipal firefighting departments, as I know many hotshots do; I want to get involved directly with wildland firefighting, which I understand is possible? From what I've found on the net, prior experience is not necessary with firefighting as they give special training for wildland firefighting. I've worked on a trail crew for the NPS for a summer and worked for a municipal government for a summer, so I ran into several people who did the hotshot thing during the summer. I've found some of the fitness requirements on the net (1.5 mile run in 10:30, 7 pullups, 25 pushups in a minute) and find that easy. I'm having trouble finding exactly where and how I should apply? The Federal application process is hazy to me. Can anyone with experience offer guidance where/what units I should apply to? I do not run cross country and I realize in the fall I will not be in great running shape after a summer of firefighting. I'm going to try to sort everything out and apply for jobs over Christmas break. Thanks for advice. You can e-mail me at freewillreigns2112@hotmail.com if you wish.
