Nothing wrong with only wanting to run a couple hours a week. You're allowed to only care a tiny bit about running. But you're getting flak because what's the point of talking about your potential if you aren't going to put in the work?
You'll never reach your potential on 10, 20, or even 30 mpw. It'd be like asking your boss what your potential at the company will be, but then saying you'll be arriving late, leaving early, and taking 2-hour lunches. The question has no point if you're just looking to slide by.
If running isn't really a priority, just get out there a little and see what happens. You'll be faster than most of the casual joggers. But don't bother asking a silly question about potential.
that's pretty impressive but again I've never stated that a sub 20 5k off 10 miles was impressive nor have I claimed to be some special talented runner lmao. I asked for opinions on what my potential for the 1mile/5k would be if i stayed at 10 miles a week. Its a hypothetical question that people cant seem to understand or they are just butt hurt that they cant run as fast off 10 miles a week. idk maybe people are just insecure
Of course bruh, everyone here is envy of your 19:57 5k off 10 miles/week
Don't get me wrong you MAY have some decent talent, I can see you running mid 17s when you get to around 30 miles/week and maybe sub 17 if you average 30 miles/week for a few months with some well-tought and consistent workouts, but please don't make such a big deal of it, to the point people here would be envy of you
I was able to run a 4:49 mile off about 5 mpw and zero endurance training with 2 interval sessions a week. While being a daily smoker lol and having no talent.
What do I want?
Now listen here, you saucy, saucy boy. I know what you want. You want to be known as that super talented guy who gives no f's. Who runs 16's and then lights up some puffy puff so nonchalantly w/ the boys afterward. Too cool for school.
But this is letsrun, not /r/running, and I'll be the first to tell you we don't take too kindly to saucy boys like you around here. On these mean streets only the trials of miles matter. Emaciated body, chafed nipples, and inability to make eye contact w/ strangers on the street. That's what we're about here, got it?
chill buddy not everyone has 5-6 hours a week just for running. Not everyone bodies can handle that much pounding. I have multiple hobbies outside of running, work 45-50 hours a week. Have a social life and a pet to maintain. Im not tryna run a fcking 15 minute 5k my guy. Go back to your depressing situation of a life.

Lmao. Rojo, get this person a t-shirt ASAP. If this isn't Post of the Day idk what is.
If you prefer low mileage, why not train for 800m? You can put together a decent low mileage program that is only say 20 miles per week. Your long run will be more than 5k and so you can still do a half decent 5k once in a while.
You may not save a ton of time if any since track workouts need more warmup and rest breaks.
5:39 mile and 19:57 5k been averaging 10 miles a week for about 2 months and still improving a lot off this low mileage. mostly easy to moderate runs 2-5 miles.
Shocked that off 10 mpw you can only run a 5:39 mile given you ran a 19:57 5k. Those are fairly equivalent times, and you'd expect the mile to way faster than your 5k off of so little training, especially considering your username suggest that you are male.

Nerd alert! Go back to watching dragonball z, dweeb!
The few eventual 14 min or 15 min 5 k runners out of thousands of new runners I’ve seen were typically faster than you are now their very first day, with 0 miles of training. Most of the eventual (by high school graduation) 16 min 5k runners were faster than you are now at your experience level. Your stated times and mileage so far reminds me of what many eventual 17 something 5 k runners do. Most high school runners never get into the 17s. Everyone’s trajectory is different, so I am giving you approximations. Despite what you read here sometimes about fast and slow, ever getting into the 15s in the 5k is like making the starting five on a league champion high school basketball team. 16s is like a starter on a regular basketball team and 17s is like good on your neighborhood at basketball and better than your friends by a lot. Enjoy your running!
It’s fun to speculate on various training methodologies. I went 19:24 in the 5k at age 53 on 18 miles a week using something like steady state training. I ran a 5k 5X a week. I ran each run at slightly below threshold pace and found I very gradually got faster with the same effort every week. The theory is you simply adapt to running faster. I finally got to where I was averaging each week under 7 min pace….until I got greedy and added intervals and blew up with various injuries.
This is complete speculation; but if you are young and injury free, I think it is possible to get your average runs daily runs around 6 min pace. I guess 18 flat in the 5K.
Here’s a link to this type of thinking that was extremely successful for Thousand Oaks. Look up Milo of Croton for an interesting historical perspective.

You'll get your answer better through action...as opposed to talking about it. All the best...

I've thought about since I am more speed oriented, but this year I'm racing in a local road 5k series. I am doing mile time trials once a month with a buddy. But if i trained for the 800 i would be doing it all solo and there's not very many local track races where i live.
