Everyone seems to be overlooking the great day from Drew Brill, he will do great things in the future! I got the chance to catch up with him after the race, very humble and well spoken.
Interesting that there was a camera at 1600, giving Martin a time of 3:59.55 over 1600. Not sub 4 in the mile, but he was sub 4 for 1600 for a nice consolation prize.
Well said Mr Magoo! Drew Brill is a humble young man with a tremendous career ahead of him. Looking forward to seeing him chase down more runners and more mamba juice!
Putting all those guys in one race would not lead to a fast race, it would turn tactical as it’s a de facto national championship. Those guys would have better chances breaking 4 in time trials set up for them to win, or in elite fields where they hang on in mid to back of pack
The distance kids in the Philly area LOVE this kid. The talent is obvious but I also think the "nerd" look has mass appeal amongst our young running community.
No high school races usually don’t turn tactical someone always likes to take it out. Also if the designated purpose of the meet is to break 4 then they wouldn’t let it be slow. If anything the biggest problem I see is having 10 guys all around the same pr is that they won’t have running room or someone will take it out to hard because they want to lead.
In all the years of watching the Penn Relays HS mile, very rarely has it gone out very fast at all. It has almost always been a tactical affair. Here's your all time leader. McGorty who went to Stanford 4:04.xx. Here are your mile and 3K entries. 3K record long standing, could go with Langon and Sherrys in. this.
I imagine Sherry is going to be gunning for that record, I know after he won Nats 2mile he expressed that he wanted to go sub 8:40 so I’d imagine sub 8 is in the cards
PA prep led wire to wire in a high school only race and won by 9 seconds.
Keep your eyes wide open for Quinn Worrell who was third in this race. Just a year ago he had PRs of 4:38 and 2:03 and he has consistently worked his way into being one of the top kids in PA. This kid is a natural racer who will make his mark on the national level very soon. Lafayette got the biggest steal of the 2022 recruiting class with him.
The Lafayette coach is one of the best young coaches in the NCAA. He took over a last place team and now has them towards the top of the league, impressive for a school that nobody has ever heard of. They are now beating my alma mater which used to be one of the top teams on the east coast.
It looked a bit windy too in the first part of the race, too. With him out front, no wind could help a bit. Great race to watch, and solid interviews from this kid, too.
Martin runs sub 4:01 and a sub 50 relay split at the same meet while having no track to train on at his school. Goes to the local junior where the track has lost all of its cinders. And not having done any speed work-all tempo runs, long runs and fartlek!!
Gotta tell you: I've watched Martin with interest for a while now, and if you watch him run this one and aren't impressed at the composure and flow with which he runs 4-flat, man, you must be a lot harder to impress than me. I don't think I've seen a high school runner in a long time who has looked this smooth at that kind of speed. Splits were almost flat even except for a tick faster on the last lap, nobody did any of the work for him, and that stride...whoa.
I don't know what training he's doing—some others have said he runs on cinders, that he runs mostly tempo...—but give me what he's having. (I'd love to believe that running on cinders really does turn out to be invaluable...makes being an old guy seem not so irrelevant.
