Does anyone that lives in a ski town have any advice for winter running (when the road are too steep/icy to use for training)? I have seen some "running" snow shoes online, but it's hard to imagine doing any real mileage in them...

I'd have access to plenty of cross country ski trails, but I would rather find a way to run on them (or elsewhere) than to take up cross-country skiing.
I have no experience with running in snow so any advice is appreciated. In fact, I even saw one article online about putting screws in the bottom of your shoes??
Cheers.
