I understand why the average time for marathons have increased to over 4:10. Running and walking got more popular with the masses who now do marathons. Most are not interested in being a 2:30 marathoner and many do it to raise money for TnT etc or are simply rec runners with no real competitive desires (at least not at that level).
That said, you would think at least a few of them would be interested in higher level running.
I just received the results book for my last marathon and was surprised to see how many sub 2:30 people there were in there. Most seemed to be in the early to mid 80s (at this race anyway).
So where did they go?
